hi tim_occ

you're right.'kapitälchen' means 'x-height'.
(but i think, it was usually translated to 'small caps'. traditionally the height had a difference of something around 10% between the english and the german typography.)
your suggestion ('kapitälchen' for 'petite caps' and 'vergrösserte kapitälchen' for 'small caps') seems to be correct.

Hmmm it seems your default paragraph style is altered in some manner.
I had a page set up in scribus on my system and added a page number to it. Applied the default style and which left justified the text.  I selected the text and centered it. No extra space in front of it.  I wonder what is happening with it. What version of scribus are you using?

At the German-speaking community here:

I think the German translation for "small caps" and "petite caps" is not correct.

Currently, there is the following translation:
Small Caps = Kapitälchen
Petite Caps = Kleine Kapitälchen

"Kapitälchen" is the smallest size of a capital. It can't be smaller.

Character size from biggest to smallest:
Capitals = full height
Small Caps = bigger than x height
Petite Caps = x height

I think the correct translation should be:
Petite Caps = Kapitälchen (because it is a Capital with x-height)
Small Caps = Vergrößerte Kapitälchen (because it is a bigger version of a petite cap or a smaller version of a capital)

What do you think?

Also a sample of the file will really help.

Off hand i'd say you might have a leading white space stuck in in there. Have you checked?

Thank you for your suggestions. It was an indent inherited from default style.

Thank you! It was "Default Paragraph", which contains an indent.

Created new paragraph style for centered text.

I just see there are no (visible) execution rights, and my user seems to be an administrator. So it seems this idea was misleading.

--- --- - - - -.-  - - - --- –

So then I restarted the machine (Chines wisdom: "Wenn nix mehr tut, reboot"). When I tried again, I was asked to install Rosetta (which I had not been needing before). After this, Scribus did start.

I am not aware to have seen this Rosetta screen before. Anyway..

Are there currently any development efforts towards getting it running natively on the topic Apple platform?

Thank you.

hi,

I am also struggling to install Scribus on a new mac (with M2 processor, on Ventura 13.5.1).

I downloaded the file, double clicked it to run the installer and can see now a file called Scribus in the program folder. If I double click, I see a short animation, then nothing. No error message. In the list of programs currently running (the command-option-escape screen) it is not listed.

In such a situation, Apple suggests to click the program icon while holding the control key. Context menu opens, but selecting Open from there does not make a difference.

After opening Information from the context menu of the file I see that I have just the rights to read and write. So for me it smells like I need the execution rights, can that be? But I see no way to add them. I wonder if it is a Scribus issue or an Apple issue.

Thank you...

Layout Issues / Center (horizontal) alignment ...
Last post by DragonPub - August 31, 2023, 01:51:10 AM
Greetings. Newbie. Thank you for your patience & your expertise. I have diligently searched the internet for this problem, but every single hit I've ever found is for vertical alignment, not horizontal. I'm surprised I don't find it, but maybe it's a peculiarity of my system.

Right-click text frame.
Content Properties.
Align Text Center.

Result: "Centered" text is always offset to the right, regardless of content or length of text. Also regardless of left-facing or right-facing page. Left & Right Text Distances both zero.

Sample enclosed. Page number (doesn't matter if it's auto-generated page number or static text) is offset to the right. Page number is 1, greyish region on left marks off halfway point across text frame. Not just a WYSIWYG problem, because I pulled the screenshot from the resulting PDF. I doubt it has anything to do with the printer, but it's Epson L-555 FWIW. Font doesn't seem relevant.

Expected: the text (page number) should be centered on the half-way point of the text frame.

I could work around page numbering problem by justifying left on left-facing pages & right on right-facing pages. But trying same for headers containing book title & chapter title would look weird. They too are all off-center. Trying to shrink text frame down to contents then centering that seems kludgy and maybe error-prone, not to mention tedious.

Advice & insights appreciated.
