Help with text spacing / runaround around text / image frames

Apologies for asking for help on such a basic topic, but I've been beating my head against it for weeks and going through the documentation, without finding a solution.

I have a two-column document in process with a number of text and image frames. I am trying to create a consistent space around the frames with text flow, so that the surrounding text does not come too close to the borders of the frames. This is not a complex layout matter - the frames are either one or two columns wide, and there are no fancy image shapes for the main body text to wrap around.

How can I do this? Where is the setting? In "Shape"? Is there some generic text and image frame style to do this? Is the correct term for this "runaround" - or should I be looking for something else?

The document is basically complete aside from this annoying niggle. Please help! Thanks!

are the images and the frames the same size? Meaning the image fills the frame and the frame isnt being used to mask the image?

If so... double click the image, there should be a blue circle with and crosshair shown. :)Select the image properties window, and adjust the dpi, you will need to shrink it a lil so the image will have some space around it. :)

Hopefully this will work for your layout.

You will need to adjust the image in the frame to recenter or move left, right. up, down as needed.

This will only work for a plain frame.

hi pstjmack

the usual way is completely different from admfubar's idea.
the object wich should knock out the text needs to be above the text. (on an upper layer or higher in the stack of elements on the same layer).
  • select this object and go to 'properties' → 'shape' → 'text flow'
  • select the fourth icon ('text flow around contour line')
  • click 'properties' → 'shape' → 'shape' → 'edit'
  • in the 'node editor' click 'edit contour line'
  • now you can either expand the contour line by a percentage or by a fixed value to all sides or move the control points (free or with the arrow keys) or even add new control points and create a free contour line.

depending on the size of the font used and the size of the image, getting a nice even shape would be tedious if there is a lot of images.

I came up with another method that will help, especially if using a complex shape.
Select one the polygon shapes and place it on the page, adjust the size as needed.
Then copy the polygon and paste it onto the page. Resize on of the polygons, make it a little larger and then select the smaller poly, right click and convert to an image frame. add the image you want to that frame. Then select both shapes and align centered hor and ver. you should see you image frame inside the other poly shape with at bit of a border spacing around it.
You can then select the text wrapping type you need for the object.

you can select the image frame and the poly around it and set the stroke color to none.
I left the stoke visible to better see what i had done.

The contour line is essentially the extra polygon you create, but it is part of the image frame (and moves with it) rather than being a separate object.
