How to make an A3 project and print it out?

  Hi,

I am working with a poster that should be A3. Starting a new document this size isn't an option so I chose the custom size and gave measures of an A3 paper. Now that everything is done, I'd like to print it out, but there's no option in the print menu for doing so, nor do any of the pdf-readers seem to be able to do it. I have a Canon printer that can print on A3 and I am using MacBook. I would appreciate a lot any tip that could get me closer to solve the issue. Thanks beforehand!

That seems very strange. All PDF viewers I have used can choose from all paper sizes the printer supports and then you can set the scaling if it does not fit (use 100% scaling to print without scaling).

You should even be able to print an A4 document on A3 paper, either non-scaled or scaled up to A3 size.

But I don't know much about the printing system on Mac.

Even stranger that A3 isnt available for you. I'm thinking there might be something wrong with your install, but before you go through making changes there. I'd wait for other mac users to add their ideas.

What version of scribus are you using and what version of macOS?

Thank you for the answers. I agree, there's something strange in this.

I am using macOS version 13.4.1 and Scribus version 1.5.6.1.

is 1.5.6 the latest available for the mac? if you can get 1.5.8 and see if the problem persists.

As the old paper size list was huge, we created a limited default list.
Go into Preferences, Page Sizes, and ensure that A3 or any other size you want is in the Active Sizes list.

1.5.8 is available, yes.

Still, any PDF viewer should be able to print an A4 PDF on A3 if the printer can handle A3. So if A3 is not available for the printer from the PDF viewer, that has nothing to do with Scribus.

Hi all, have just started working in Scribus, and really liking it.

While my problem is a bit different to the above, the description is exactly the same.

I have an A3 page in Scribus. In that page is one square image, sized to the margins of the page, filling it to the side margins.

I have an A3 printer (Brother inkjet), with A3 paper in it, set to print at 100%.
Normally that gives me an A3 printout.

With Scribus I keep getting this:

which looks to be printing at about 70% size. (The back line is a shape near the outer edge of the page to better show the size of the printout)

Any ideas what might be causing that? Scribus 1.6.2 on Windows 11. Thanks!

Rule 1 when it comes to Scribus: Never print directly from Scribus.

Export to a PDF and print from a PDF viewer. Make sure the PDF viewer is set to print 100% scale.

Can I assume that the thin black line around the image  is the stroke color for the  image frame?

If that is is the case, resize the frame. If not, post an attachment of an example .sla to inspect.

No, the image frame is the size of the image.
The black line is around the border of the A3 page.

The whole reason I'm looking to use Scribus is it's ability to print CMYK separations without Acrobat. Most PDF viewers can't actually do that, so I'm stuck going back to Acrobat to print, which unfortunately negates my need for Scribus in the first place.

That said, I just tried to recreate it to send through, and that page printed fine. Exactly the same settings, exactly the same elements, and it's not doing it now. Maybe it's printing separations only that this happened, will check that.

It's now working fine, and I can't get it to break.
I won't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Thought it may be related to including PDF annotations & Links, or Set Media Size, but changes to either didn't make it reoccur.

AdmFubar

Well it seems to be working for you now. I wonder what the issue was.
