when you drag and drop an image into scribus, the size of the newly created frame will not bigger than the page.

in your case, it's maxed at the page width.

believe me, that's a good idea: you don't want to resize an image that is 100 times the page size!

now that you know this, what can you do?

on the one side, you can "correctly" set the image resolution before dragging the image into scribus: scribus will retain it, when creating the frame and you will get something that is closer to what you are expecting.

you can also first create a frame of the correct size (and put it in the scrapbook, so that you can insert it on new pages with a double click) and drop the image on the existing frame.

also, if you want the images to always (or mostly) scale to the frame size, you can modify the preferences of the "item tools > images" (or in the document settings, for the current document) and tell scribus about your predilection.

then, the images will be scaled to the frame size by default.

voilà, i hope that helps..

Beginner Talk / style manager Window too big (...
Last post by catrine - Today at 04:45:39 AM
Hi, I am a beginner with Scribus. I think it probably is very good but that "style manager Window" business being too big to access the "apply" button is really a big bug. A desktop publishing software without styles is near useless. I know it has been mentioned before, but the replies I have seen have been unsatisfactory: hold Alt and move the window with the mouse doesn't work for me and applying a patch might be a good advice for a computer wiz but not for an ordinary person: I wouldn't have a clue how to do it and would not venture into that sort of thing either.
Can someone fix the bug so the window can be resized or give a practical solution to the issue?
I am working on Windows 10 pro and have the latest Scribus version 1.5.4 and my laptop is Lenovo thinkpad T470s
I'd love to attach a screen capture but I can't work out how to do it.
Thanks

of course, here are more informations :

I'm using scribus 1.5.8

step 1 - settings : file > document setup > item tools > images > free scaling (100% 100%)

step 2 - drag and drop the image :
Screenshot_2023-06-05_00-10-31.png

step 3 - right click > image > adjust frame to image :
Screenshot_2023-06-05_00-11-41.png

step 4 - new document, settings : file > document setup > item tools > images > scale image to frame size (keep aspect ratio)

step 5 - drag and drop the image :
Screenshot_2023-06-05_00-08-01.png

the scaling value in the "image properties" panel on the right is coherent. And the frame size is consistent, whether we have the option "free scaling" or "scale image to frame" activated, the frame has the same size. And for this image, the frame is apparently 25.91% of the image size (I mean, the 72 DPI that the image states to be)

But why do scribus choose to create a frame that is smaller than the image size, and how is the size of this frame chosen ?

I guess the issue here is that a pixel does not have a defined size. Most likely Scribus honors the resolution (DPI) stated in the image file. Changing this value before importing the image probably changes how Scribus scales the image.

hi

it look nice... and i have some feedback from you:

as far i can tell, the page panel gets useful, when there are lot of pages and -- then -- i guess i would prefer to have the preview to be a/ as small as possible b/ showing as many pages as possible.

i n the screenshot you've submitted, the palette does a good job at rendering the characteristic of the pages (which can be very useful when you need to pick the "right" page), on the other side, seems to contain rather big placeholders: so few pages visible at once.

i'm also eager to see how the pallette looks when the layout is horizontal... this is the feature that imo is really missing in the current version of the panel.

next point: the drag and drop.
while being able to drag and drop feels cool, i'm not sure how useful it is in real life.
people will probably expect to have it, so i'm more than fine that MPs can be dropped onto pages and pages can simply be shuffled around.
but i think that for many use cases, it will be simpler to use an alternative interaction, like "select and apply".

as an example, i would probably want to be able to apply a master page to the currently selected page, without having to drag and drop, just click it (maybe this is already the case in your prototype... i don't know)

it should probably also be possible to select multiple pages at once: for moving them (in facing pages document, one should normally move pairs of pages) or for applying the same master page to multiple pages.
somehow i would like that it gets easier to select four pages and  move them to the end of the chapter, without the need to keep the mouse down and painfully scrolling down by keeping the pointer at the bottom of the list (i've already done that too often in my life...).

finally, scribus currently does not support more than two pages in a spread (and this should probably not change as long as scribus cannot do imposition).
(scribus is still able to open old documents with three pages spread, but i don't think that there is anybody on earth, who is going to open such a document with 1.8 when it will be stable... imo, if you want to be on the safe side, you can add a check to the page palette and tell the user that for this document the palette is disabled).

voilà, it got longer than i was planning, but i hope that you can use some of this feedback to make your work even better : - )

have a nice sunday

Scribus never edits the image, its just how its presented. However to understand your issue more, we would need to know about what version of Scribus you are using, and probably get a copy of the image.

No idea, I also subscribe via RSS and did not get them. I'd suggest looking at your RSS application in case there was some reset on last read done.

thank you for your answer utnik :)

it does the trick ! but not in the way i would expect it. The images are now fitting their frame when i drag and drop them on a scribus project, but they are not at their right size, they are scaled to a smaller size, which explain your last phrase
Quoteyes, there are situations where i prefer a 100% scaling
. Yes, I do too ! In tons of situations.

Why would scribus change the size of an image when importing it ? and on what basis ? How does it choose the new scale ? And can i prevent this ?

I worked on a new version for 1.7.0svn

That is the current state.
