Quote from: scriber on March 28, 2024, 08:52:05 PMAs I read around, that's the golden rule to ensure result exactly as desired. But for online services, how does that work?

They can submit a digital proof (a .pdf) of your work that you can accept as is or not.

Quote from: scriber on March 28, 2024, 08:52:05 PMAre they usually be able to verify themself with a proof and compare to my digital document (my PDF generated by Scribus)?

In French, for that we have the BAT...

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imprimerie

Once the digital document is completed, we will produce the contractual proof that will anticipate the final appearance and conformity of the work (typography, location of illustrations, respect for colors). This document has become «good to draw» will serve as a reference for the printer who will have to respect its aspect. The test is called contractual because it serves as a reference in case of dispute.

Excuse my bad english. Spontaneously (I have very few experience with printers) I prefer to export cover/poster/work in one image .tiff. Maybe you need adjusting yours settings for best matches rendering of your original .pdf with the .tiff.
Then you can very well export this .tiff into .pdf via scribus if useful.

For me, from what I have read and understand, what can often cause possible problems with a printer, will be "officially" : "the original software source of the document" (...), "fonts", "transparency effects" and "other effects"... An image is by definition "flat" : the possible problems of fonts management, transparencies and effects will not be affected. The only (possible) problem that will remain to be managed, will be related to colorimetry.

For me, a flat image as a page (in your case your cover), will give less potential problems than a .pdf source including effects, raster and vector images with transparencies, + fonts...
But it might require some extra work (to get the .tiff equivalent to what you want).

PDF Generation / what is "file / print preview"...
Last post by jeepe - April 11, 2024, 12:06:03 AM
hi,

I stumbled upon file / print preview by sort of an accident...
later I didn't remember how I got there...  took me an hour to get back there again...

in Scribus 1.5.8 it showed a layer with transparency (a rectangle filled with white at opacity 60% or so) as a fully white rectangle... opacity 100%....

I changed, as we can do this thanks for your developing work, to 1.6...

now it's only PDF or postscript.. (level 1-3)

The PDF version looks as I'd imagine... (right or wrong)
that transparency problem doesn't happen..

BUT STILL...

a drop shadow effect, of white letters over almost magenta background
look like brownish, and totally crappy....
despite the print preview (CTRL + ALT + p) shows a decent image...
and the exported PDF looks good on my RGB monitor...

So what does this file / print preview even does?
What parts should we take seriously of what we see and what not?

Anyway, I attached two screen shots...
one with "print preview" (CTRL + ALT + p), and one with File / print preview

the example graphic is text over color rectangle.. with dropshadow applied...
black 100% shade opacity 60% blendmode normal

thanks in advance!! :)

@RodneyLee if you look at the name of the color, it is FromSVG#000000: so it is supposed to be black.

That brown color is a replacement color that is used by Scribus when an error happens with colors.

if transparency happens to the entire image and not just the background, you can try moving an image out from under other images and see if the color changes

Do you think it's the same problem that causes the defect in the drop caps?

Quote from: MrB on April 09, 2024, 07:59:48 AMI'd like to see exactly which settings you are changing with these numbers. Can you explain further?

1. Change default paragraph style to Automatic Lines Spacing
2. Open textbox and insert Lipsum text
3. Select paragraph in textbox and change its size (override style) in Text Properties panel

Automatic Lines Spacing always should be 120% (or whatever percent it is default in Typographic Preferences).
Well, it is not.
