General Discussion / Python Scripter issues when ru...
Last post by jerry554 - Today at 03:12:41 AM
Hi everyone,

I've been using Scribus for a few years now for magazine layout, and I've recently started getting into more advanced automation using the built-in Python Scripter. It's a fantastic tool for generating complex grids, but I've run into a strange stability issue when multitasking.

I've been testing some delta blox scripts on my secondary monitor (running through an Android emulator) while trying to execute a custom data-import script in Scribus. For some reason, as soon as the external script executor starts its cycles, Scribus's own script console becomes incredibly laggy or throws a "Script is already running" error, even if the previous command was already finished.

Is there a known issue with how the Scribus Scripter plugin manages system resources or shared memory threads? I'm trying to figure out if I need to adjust the priority of the Scribus process in my OS settings to prevent background automation from interfering with the Python interpreter. I'd love to know if anyone else uses external executors alongside Scribus and if you've found a way to isolate the processes so they don't cause the Scripter to hang or crash the layout engine.

Thanks for any help!

Actually, @a.l.e, here's a better idea. It's a straight .xml file. Here's the contents:

<COLOR Spot="0" RGB="#0000ff" Register="0" NAME="Blue"/>

<COLOR Spot="0" Register="0" NAME="White" CMYK="#00000000"/>
<COLOR Spot="0" Register="0" NAME="Yellow" CMYK="#0000ff00"/>
</SCRIBUSCOLORS>
Again, it was generated originally by Scribus. Open your favorite text editor, copy-n-paste, save it as an .xml file, and give it a shot.

It's not the file; it's some change in 1.7.x's functionality that's causing this.

Quote from: AdmFubar on March 01, 2026, 08:40:24 PMScribus' new document loads a default template that has just the those few colors. The solution would be to create your default document with the color palette  you want, save and copy it to the default document, or!, make a new template and save it in the templates and load that instead.
That makes absolutely no sense, and is not how I'm interested in using Scribus.

Quote from: a.l.e on March 01, 2026, 08:45:02 PMI did a small test and could not notice anything wrong.

Would you mind giving a bit more details?
  • How did you create the list of colors?
  • Would you mind sharing a list of colors that can be used to reproduce the issue?
  • What are the steps you are doing before you get to the three only colors?

  • I created it by way of starting with the basic default colors that Scribus ships with, then manually looking up the values for traditional printer's colors (reflex blue, rhodamine red, etc.) and adding them in, then exporting that to a file straight out of Scribus. I've never had any problems importing them as my default list of colors in any prior version of Scribus I've been doing this with.
  • Sure, I can do that. What's the best way of uploading my exported color file so it can be examined?
  • If I do nothing, I only have those three colors. If I import my color file, I ultimately have only those same three colors.

Quote from: utnik on March 02, 2026, 12:07:13 AMif you press 'delete unused' in 'colors and fills' without an open file, you will end up with black, white and registration only. (you need to select a color before 'delete unused' is clickable...)

to solve the problem you need to select a palette (or create a custom one) – again without an open file. if you change the palette when a document is open, your fix will just be for this single file.
That's exactly how I do this. It's worked in Scribus 1.4.x, 1.5.x, and 1.6.x.

I assume it is a pasted or imported text that has "typewriter" formatting (i.e. LF+LF) to get spacing between paragraphs.

I have often done  similar replacement in Word.

Can you please post a demo .sla file with the "wrong" text in one frame and the "right" one in another?

It does not need to be long. A few paragraphs of "Lorem Ipsum" might be enough.

That would help to understand what exactly you need and check if the proposed solution matches your wishes.

Text and Typography / Re: Picking the ideal text imp...

Did some more testing today after a friend was unable to replicate the locally-assigned-bold issue I was having on html import. I loaded the same 3 html files about 5 times each in Scribus 1.6.1, 1.6.4 and 1.7.2 in new files, cleared files and my template.

I think, and I'm still not sure if there's other circumstances where this happens, that the problem arises specifically if you import the text twice because you messed up your substitution font. The sequence of events:
  • You import the html text but see that the bold text is assigned to the wrong font, because you forgot to set the correct substitution font
  • You then clear out the text frame and change the substitution font. You don't delete all the imported html styles
  • When you import the html again, the importer sees that the preset h1, h2 etc. styles use the wrong font. Rather than change the font in those styles, it manually applies the new substitution font on top of every instance of those styles

I don't remember making that mistake last week when I was testing, but I am pretty forgetful so it's not unlikely. It looks like the lesson is to always close the file without saving if you mess up the import and load it into a fresh file.

I need some help to substitute search and replace characters LF LF to CR ? to have correct paragraphs jutifieds.

The script :
https://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Clean-up_the_imported_text_based_on_the_Slovak_typographic_rules

with a line :(u'\u000a'+u'\u000a'+r'+',u'\u000d')

doesn't work and it's a pity because scribus uses RTL very well !

Thank you if you have an answer
