Importing text with formatting - what am I missing here?

Hey everyone,

So. I've been using Scribus for a while now, but recently I ran into a problem, and I'm not really sure what's happening.

I'm trying to import this text into Scribus, it contains formatting such as bold and italics (both applied directly to the text, not using character styles in the word processor). The file is also .ODT, and when importing, I'm setting the importer to ODT Document and making sure to uncheck the option "import text only".

My problem is: once the text is imported, and I try and apply a paragraph style to it, some aspects of the style (such as size, spacing, and alignment) are applied, but the font doesn't change, it remains the same as it was in the word processor (in this case Times New Roman).

I understand this is an override and I could (technically) solve the problem by using the "Remove Direct Paragraph Formatting" option, BUT...when I use this option, Scribus gets rid of the bold and italics too, which is not what I want.

I want to keep the bold and italics, apply the paragraph style and then search and replace the bolds and italics with the equivalent font(Bitter bold and Bitter italic) that I'm using for my paragraph style -- I think that's the way to edit text with formatting in Scribus, since it doesn't have a find and replace with character style option :(

The funny thing is that when I change the font of my text file to Arial instead of Times New Roman in the word process, and do the same process of importing and applying a paragraph style, Scribus works. It applies the paragraph style and the proper font (bitter regular), and I'm able to do what is described in the paragraph above.

But I'm confused. What's happening, why does this process work with Arial, but not with other fonts? Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

Its probably very easy. As you know /b, /c and alike don't work in Scribus, its designed as a  real dtp package. This means that if you want a bold character or word with some font that you also must have the bold version of that font, if not than no bold. You have from Arial probably  the "full" set, this is the regular font, the bold font, the italics font and some more. Probably  you don't have the same with Times New Roman. Start Scribus. Go  to "File" > "Preferences..." > "Fonts". Be sure you have the "available fonts" tab. Now you can browse through the fonts in order  to see what is available on your system. You should have "Times New Roman Regular", "Times New Roman Bold", "Times New Roman Italic" and "Times New Roman Bold Italic". I'm not sure if I  deleted some, so there might be more. In front of the font names there is a tick-box, is it empty  or used. If empty then tick it.
