I compiled Scribus 1.7.2 and happily imported styled .odt text, consisting of 4 lines of Liberation Serif - in Normal, Italics (style Emphasis), Bold (Strong Emphasis) and Bold Italics (Strong Italics).
Everything looked just fine, with spaces preserved and styles correctly applied.
The problem manifested, when I tried to change fonts in styles. It shows another chosen font, but it did not change it. Saving, closing, reloading did not help either.
On the other hand, change of the size reflected immediately upon pressing Apply button.
hi sersha
your .sla file contains some direct formatting which overrides the character styles. you can remove the direct formatting for the active selection with the button on the right side of the style name in the 'text properties'.

Thanks a million! That was it. Somewhere I missed the direct formatting...
I double-checked the original .odt file, then made a new one, where I created new styles for Emph, EmphStrong, Strong for Italics, Bold Italics and Bold respectively.
Then I typed 4 lines in default font, gave each of them appropriate styling. For safety's sake, I also cleared a direct formatting by Ctrl-M. Saved.
Importing in Scribus, and out of nowhere it appears a direct formatting again, which can be removed by the abovementioned technique indeed.
The question is - where is it coming from? And, what to do to prevent this direct formatting from appearing?
Also, when attempting to change styles, which should follow the Default Character Style, they do not really follow it. It is as if on the occasion formatting taken from the respective character style (say, Emph) is converted into a direct formatting, which requires manual clearing to enable changes.
LibreOffice version is 24.2.7.2.
