Title: Corrupted Copy
Post by: Sheba2 on December 19, 2025, 09:01:40 PM
In taking some online tutorials, it brought to mind that my copy of the program may be corrupted because things will work and then they don't work and then they work! Also, when striving to follow along with the tutorials, my compluter would not always function properly when following the instructions online. My question is: If I uninstall Scribus 1.6.4 on my MacBook and re-install it, will I lose the files I currently have in Scribus? How do I COMPLETELY uninstall it on the MacBook?

Follow your standard procedure uninstalling on the mac. It should uninstall the program. Your data files are your and do not get uninstalled from removing the program. However, before you uninstall the program, try renaming the preferences for scribus. do the rename without scribus running and let it recreate the default prefs. This might be the source if the issues you are having.

How old is your system? and is it a ssd or a spinning harddrive?

Tahoe 26.1 and I believe it is ssd. This might sound silly, but how do I rename the preferences for scribus with it running--I do not understand that since I think it has to be open to rename the preferences. Which preferences are you referring to? Thanks for your help--I will not uninstall until hearing back.

hi sheba2

you'll find the scribus preferences on mac os in /users/(your user name)/library/preferences/scribus. i would rename this folder (when scribus isn't running...) to something like 'scribus_old'. at the next launch scribus will create a new folder with the standard preferences.

I finally got back to this and could not find the preferences folder....in fact, in /users/my user name, there is no "library" file. There is a "library" file under MacHD so I looked there and there is a "preferences" file but nothing with "scribus." In fact, most of the files start with "apple"? Any other ideas where the preferences file would be--I know sometimes the files are difficult to find. Thanks for any help--I haven't uninstalled as of now.

hi sheba

ok. – i forgot that apple hides this 'library' by default.
here (https://setapp.com/how-to/how-to-show-library-folder-on-mac) you'll find different ways to access it.
