Title: Hyphenation in 1.4.6 after using Edit Text tool
Post by: PemburySinger on January 16, 2018, 05:31:20 PM
I have left and right justified text in my "Tutorial" magazine, and it's supposed to hyphenate, but this isn't happening. I've been into File>Preferences and File>Document Setup and ensured that hyphenation is selected, but it seems to be ignored. What I see in the window that comes up when setting this up is "Hyphenate Text Automatically During Typing". How is this supposed to work when text is copied from a document and pasted into the text editor tool?

I've found a solution in Extras.

However, the left/right justification gives me a different problem at the end of paragraphs. The left/right justification can mean that, for example, if there are just two words on the last line of a paragraph, there is one word on the left, and one word on the right, which looks silly. What can be done about this?

There are two variants of the justified alignment.

The one you seem to be using is called Forced Justified, it seems you want the plain Justified.

Thanks Nermander. Where would I find "Plain Justified"?

I have attached an image showing what the l-r justified text looks like in the example magazine that comes with the files that one downloads with the tutorial for Scribus. My "Forced Justified" text displays the paragraph ends as previously described. I would like my paragraph ends to look like the example, so need to know where to find the "Plain Justified" option, as this isn't obvious.

The text alignment icons are (from left to right): Align Text Left, Align Text Centre, Align Text Right, Align Text Justified, and Align Text Forced Justified.
You need the second align icon from the right (note the last "line" on the icon where it doesn't fill the space).

You're welcome.

It's worth noting that if you're going to be justifying text then you should also be learning about more serious typographical issues. Simply justifying the text will leave you with all kinds of big spaces in the text that will probably make it look worse than having a ragged edge.

Have a look at manual tracking and word spacing (and other related things) to see what you can do to make the text look much nicer.
