MacOS / Preferences gray out for 1.6.1...
Last post by reckoz - June 11, 2024, 11:51:14 AM
I haven't used Scribus on Mac for quite a while. I updated to Scribus 1.6.1, and the preferences button grayed out (unclickable).

I deleted the ~/Library/Preferences/Scribus and let the program create the files once again. Same. The System Preferences-Security is checked. No warning. So the program should have no problem on disk i/o. Does anyone have ideas of the causes?

For the time being, I downgraded back to 1.5.8, which is the last working version for me. The Preferences button comes back and functions normally.

Yep, I saw where you were going with that... and TBH I wasn't 100% sure which I was using until I checked... I normally go with the 64-bit option when it's available though.

I'll try the RAM test out of interest, but I've compiled the PDF on my home development PC, and my work laptop with exactly the same results.

Re: the images - there are nearly 900 of them, so I don't even know where to start with that.

But if I split the file into 3 smaller PDFs (with no compression / DPI limits) less than 4Gb each, then each opens fine... so it seems to be something to do with the creation of a PDF crossing that 4Gb boundary rather than something inside the file itself (unless it's a combination of the two).

It's a very interesting problem... I may need to file a bug report.

General Discussion / Scribus user interface lack be...
Last post by podeyo4755 - June 10, 2024, 12:09:01 PM
my workplace-
~100k+ circulation newspaper agency (very new: 2022 founded)
We publish a small ~30 to 40 page magazine on sunday along with it
I work with 1 other co-worker(also my friend) on that magazine(we only work on designing not on content)

This year, I even managed my current workplace default dtp to switch from indesign to scribus cause me and that my co-worker friend have good experience as we have (worked on/published) 10+ big form magazines/books.
Working in scribus, only thing working on feel very unintuitive is its user interface which looks like 2000s. even, many editors and managers usually come to our desk and we show them progress and all, we regularly gets poked about its user interface, how everything looks/feel.
I looked at AFFINITY Publisher, and it made me very furious that we are lacking behind in that aspect, i am a very open source attached guy so shifting i am delaying as on paper it works for me.
i am currently working on 1.6.1 and my question here is, is there a version for which scribus roadmap has set to overhaul its user interface. havent look at 1.7.
please reply and also if you are scribus developer, would love your view. Ty for Scribus

thought if you were using a 32 bit version there might be an odd bug with 4gb files.

Next is to check the images. make sure they are error free.
I'd also run a test on your system's ram, memtest86+ will give it a thorough exercising.

Text and Typography / Styles in import process
Last post by Potorato - June 09, 2024, 12:43:31 PM
Hello, I have a question about text import. I prepare the text in LibreOffice, where I apply some basic styles. From the text box in Scribus, I import the text without any issues and with the styles. The problem arises when I modify the original text in LibreOffice and re-import it into Scribus. I have two options: import only the text, which makes me lose the styles, or import with styles, but for some reason, it duplicates them instead of keeping only the existing ones. Is it not possible to import the corrected text while maintaining the current styles? Thank you.

Beginner Talk / Scribus Suggested as a Way to ...
Last post by Muttleytm - June 09, 2024, 03:12:31 AM
I'd like to create a document with two or three layers that I'd like the ability to toggle the visibility of each layer on and off, maybe adjust transparency, color, etc as well.

The layers would be image files and basically a very old map and another current map and perhaps aerial photos, etc.

I'd also like it viewable (with working controls) so people could view it with just a pdf viewer (maybe a specific on) or perhaps a browser.

My image started out as a TIF file for one and a vector file for the other (the current map). I have them in QGIS and toggle them on and off, as I'd like but really can't share them with anyone unless they too want to install QGIS.  QGIS allows me to export layers as layered geo pdfs however, sort of. It works if the layer is a vector file, but not for a raster file like a TIFF.

It sounds like with Adobe Acrobat Pro this can be done, but it relies on a lot of Javascript coding I know nothing about and Adobe support and their support community is not very helpful.

It's been suggested that this can be done with Scribus. I've just looked around a little and see I can have controllable layers within Scribus. I don't see any way to add a control to a document. I do see that I can enter javascripts. Just searching the web I saw some mention of plugins for various things for Scribus, but in looking over the options I haven't found any listings for plugins. So maybe that is something that no more.

I also want the image files stored in the document or saved as local files. I had looked into doing things totally with javascript but I was told it won't work with local files as a security measure by design.

Thanks for any knowledge or helpful info in advance.
