User Interface / IndigoUI: Dock Manager and Layout Framework
« Last post by tim_occ on August 07, 2022, 01:01:53 am »
Hi all,

I remember a post from MrB expressing his wish that the various docks in Scribus could be arranged side by side.,1617.msg8842/topicseen.html#msg8842

Currently, the standard Qt Dock framework is limited and you can only place (or stack) one panel to the left and one to the right of the central widget, but not several next to it. The same applies to floating docks.

The IndigoUI docking system I developed years ago couldn't do that either. A complete in-house development is probably also not expedient and rather a waste of resources.

In search of an alternative to Scribus I found a solid framework.
See here:

I also started some tests right away and would just suggest this as a useful extension for Scribus.

What do you think?

I've been thinking about the Basepoint widget and I think it needs to be revised urgently, because it doesn't really fit either optically or technically. Technically, because many UI colors are hardcoded.
For a redesign, I primarily looked at Adobe InDesign and Affinity Publisher. In Affinity Publisher I saw that the widget also supports rotation of the selected element. I think this would be a useful widget for Scribus too.

Hi toyotadesigner

It's up to the Scribus developers whether they want the feature at all.
My plan is to first work on a concept, test it, optimize it and then you could think about what will actually be built into Scribus.
In the current IndigoUI mockups I specified Scribus 2.0. Let's see, maybe we'll see everything there.

By the way, the color picker is already programmed.  :D

User Interface / IndigoUI: Dynamic Icon Theme
« Last post by tim_occ on August 07, 2022, 12:10:18 am »
Hi all,

I have collected and tried to solve some problems with the current Scribus iconset.
- Icons are too small for 4k screens (static PNGs)
- Icons have to be specially adapted (recolored) for a dark UI theme.

As a solution, I thought of replacing all icons with SVG files and automating the icon coloring based on the UI theme.

The basis of this concept comes from Inkscape. All icons are SVG based and support both inline styles and embedded CSS files. Separate colors can be set for each icon as it is rendered on a light background or dark background.

If a graphic element in an icon has no color specified by inline style or class, then the current font color of the UI theme is applied to this element. This saves a separate icon set for light and dark backgrounds, since everything can now be configured in one go.

PNG files are still supported and are excluded from automatic changes.

The screenshots below show an example of the toolbar. Icons on a dark background are slightly lighter than on a light background.

Hi all,

I think the biggest change to the IndigoUI concept is color selection and manipulation. The basic idea is to select the color, color gradient or pattern using the color selector and edit it live there as well. Thus, in addition to ready-made colors in a color palette, you can also mix and use custom colors.

The new color picker combines several existing functions in one dialog. Managing color palettes, mixing colors and display colors for color blindness.

In addition, there are different ways to mix a color:
- Color sliders (RGB, CMYK, Lab, HSV)
- Color map (Hue, Saturation, Value, Red, Green, Blue, Lightness, a, b) -> like Photoshop
- Color harmony (Complementary, Split Complementary, Triadic, Tetradic, Square, Analogous, Monochromatic)

Feedback is welcome.

User Interface / IndigoUI: New Document Dialog

Hi all,

I did a small redesign of the "New Document" dialog. (just a proposal)

What do you think of the margin inputs?
Now the labels are gone and have been replaced with icons showing the edge side.
If you selected a page layout with more than 1 page, the left and right margin input icons will change their icons to "inner" and "outer" margin.

User Interface / IndigoUI: Page Panel

Hi all,

I worked on new widgets for the "Arrange Page" panel.
What do you think?

- customizable page size
- support of page preview
- vertical or horizontal page orientation
- applying of parent page template by drag and drop
- resorting of pages

PS: 9999 pages ~ 130ms render time with images
Layout Issues / Re: Weekly planner / editable masterpage item / scrapbook items

Hi Ewac,

Non static items are not usually included on master pages items, even in InDesign. I do like how InDesign allows you to overide individual master/parent pages but once you do that it is no longer a master page (and you lose the benefit of moving items as one that you mentioned), but it does allow you to modify the items on that page. That is why you see the months created separately from the master pages in my sample. But I could make changes to the days of the week, color, fonts, etc.. on the master pages of my calendar.
