Beginner Talk / Click and slide selection mode
« Last post by ccazerty on September 15, 2022, 11:56:24 am »
Hi everyone,

Is there a mode or some preferences with the selection tool, to set the click and slide selection more inclusive ? By default, I have to take the whole objects inside my selection. Is it possible to take all the objects that my selection is touching ?

Thank you very much,

CC

Text and Typography / Re: Special characters not showing up in Scribus

I tried to test the character with the police I choose in libre office, and it works. However, when I write the character in Scribus, I get this white square...

Yes, that's because LibreOffice has a mechanism that finds a font that contains the "ß" character and uses that instead, although it doesn't tell you that it's a different font when you highlight it. (I know… pretty confusing.)

Conclusion: Find another font for either just the ß character or for the whole text you're using in Scribus, because the latter doesn't have that easy automatic replacement mechanism.

Cheers!

Layout Issues / Re: Facing pages layout – Make first page mirrored to second page…
« Last post by toyotadesigner on September 13, 2022, 12:24:01 am »
In the western hemisphere, the first page of any publication is placed on the right side for printing.

Usually you design the front and back cover in a separate file, that means you will have both pages — front and back — appearing side by side, as long as you use saddle stitching. In case of a book binding with a spine on one single sheet you will have the back cover on the left side, the narrow spine in the middle and the front cover on the right side.

If it helps (though not for printing), you can specify the left page being the first page, as long as you don't intend to have it printed:

Layout Issues / Facing pages layout – Make first page mirrored to second page…
« Last post by legoaddict1949 on September 12, 2022, 03:25:39 pm »
When first creating the document I'm currently working on, I selected the "Facing Pages" layout. This means that all the pages are grouped in twos, which is great, but I have an issue: I don't want the first page to stand by itself. I want it to also be paired with another. Does this have anything to do with the master page? (I wouldn't think so, but hey, we never know.)

Thank you in advance.

You dont have a font that has that symbol in it.

I have to apologise. You were right! Indeed I was using only fonts which did not have the flat symbol. When downloading the MuseScore fonts from the Github repos, I finally got it to work. Thank you so much!

from what i can judge from here, you seem to be missing a library/tool (ghostscript?)

Thanks a.l.e for this. It certainly sounds like a plausible explanation. But when I've gone to check, ghostscript appears to be present and known about by Scribus (see 2 screenshots, from my command line and from Preferences > External Tools).  Does that look correct to you?

but, if you want to have vector graphics in your pdf output you have to ways you can experiment with:

- import the PDFs as vectors instead of loading them into image frames
- import SVGs as vectors instead of using PDFs.

Hmm. I did already try both of those, but they each come with stark compromises compared to the "PDF in image frame, embedded and exported" method which used to work.

It does seem to me that getting THAT to work — or even, if it solves matters more simply, being able to run Scribus 1.5.5 on this Monterey Mac — would be the best option.  I couldn't run 1.5.5 when I tried it, as it instantly crashed because I didn't have Python 2.7 any more.  I installed Python 2.7 via MacPorts, but then it's not in the location that Scribus was looking for it, and even with _sudo_ I couldn't install a symlink to it... any workarounds for that?

Cheers,
Richard.

you can try both of them and check which one works better for you.
