Title: Bug? Automatically generated copies of styles
Post by: ginkgo100 on March 08, 2012, 11:24:54 PM
Hi, I'm pretty new to Scribus, but I think what I am experiencing is some kind of bug, not a newbie mistake.

I have defined several paragraph styles. Periodically (I think it's every time I create a new text frame, but I haven't tested this), they all get automatically copied.  I have to manually delete them every so often to prevent having to scroll through a long list to find the style I want to use (of course the copies appear at the top of the list).  Otherwise I have to deal with something like:

Copy of Paragraph (1)
Copy of Paragraph (2)
Copy of Paragraph (3)
Copy of Section Header (1)
Copy of Section Header (2)
Copy of Section Header (3)
Copy of Title (1)
Copy of Title (2)
Copy of Title (3)
Paragraph
Section Header
Title

It's just an inconvenience, but it adds to my workload.  ???

Also, is there a way, after copying a number of paragraphs into the editor, to select one style for a number of them at once, instead of doing each paragraph one at a time?

I think that bug has been solved in 1.4.0 (I haven't used 1.4.0. enough to be sure).

i think that the situation has improved in 1.4, but i'm not 100% sure that the bug is fully fixed...

... i haven't used scribus enough recently, but the last time i've been using it, for some real work, it was still there.

i wanted to suggest that we should write a script to clean up the copies, but there is no command to delete styles (yet).

so, the only way to improve the situation is to try to find out when the copies are created and fill a bug with the step to reproduce... if you see it happen with scribus 1.4!

the problem is that they remain hidden in the file "copy of the style .."
One solution is to open with text editor "file.sla" and manually remove:
  <STYLE NAME = "COPY OF ...
This should solve, the problem comes back when you "import file" (text formatted); the problem comes back even when you change in an existing style your "style menager / based on"

if you find a way to predictably generate copy of styles in 1.5 or 1.4.0, please report (with steps to reproduce) in the bug tracker (http://bugs.scribus.net)

AFAIK, this can't be done inside the story editor. However, there's a couple different ways to achieve your goal without using the editor.

If you want all the text in a text box to be the same style, you can just click on the text box (not double-click, just select the frame) and set the style in the Properties palette... Text --> Style Settings

Or you can double-click inside the frame and select all the text that you want to be a particular style - then set the style in the Properties palette.

HTH,
Christen

I just select the text and chose the style (not using the "left sidebar" but the menus at the top).

This is correct, and I report this,
but this was not easy with my bad English ..
