Hello Scribus Community!

Does anyone of you use 1.7.0 and happens to know where the option overprinting vs. knockout went? I wasn't able to find it in the properties window. Has the option been removed?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm not the OP, but what's wrong with using story editor?

Or do you mean "Why are you using the Story Editor for assigning styles"?

When in the Story Editor, each new line begins with a "No Style" paragraph style.

What style should be applied to blank/empty pages? Should it be "No Style" or is it better to select something else like "Default Paragraph Style"?

In the Edit menu, look for Colors & Fills, in the window that opens, about midway down on the right is a drop down button, marked Scribus Basic. Click that and you should see a list of additional colors to add.Keep in mind you will merge the whole palette of colors, some are rather lengthy.

Registration is used for making registration marks when making 4 color separations so the plates line up in the printing process.

You can add and edit colors from this window as well.

It already happened in May:

  • A few new Scripter commands:
    • Setting the page of a PDF loaded in an image frame: getImagePage(), getImagePageCount(), setImagePage()
    • Add a "cut_text" argument to unlinkTextFrames()
    • Add itemDialog() with a simple dialog with a dropdown / combobox
  • In the preferences, make it possible to enable and disable multiple fonts at once.

  • I'm working on a solution to the bold / italic issue... but it's not as simple as you think : - )
  • There are tickets for asking a fix for that "Apply" button. I feel your pain.
  • Yes, in the normal case, bitmap images are linked into the frames.
  • Importing styled text is a big issue, yes. There is working going on to improve that.

Indeed, depending on how a person is used to work, getting into Scribus can be painful. Sorry for it.

I will have to work on that whole "layer" thing.

I updated a graphic file, and when I switched to Scribus the graphic was updated, so I guess linking graphics is standard?

I really miss the Bold / Italics / Underline buttons. I can't imagine why the programmers didn't include them. Those are pretty much standard in... well: EVERY OTHER PROGRAM! Also: why, oh why, are the icons/buttons on the taskbar so horribly tiny? And why do some of them not have a "card" to identify what they are for? The edit text tool/screen is horribly tiny too. Selecting styles per paragraph is next to impossible to do "on the fly".

On the Style management screen, there is a button that has been translated from presumably "Apply" ("Toepassen" in Dutch). That makes it seem like pressing that button is going to apply the style to the preselected text or paragraph. It took me 20 minutes to realize that it intended as "Apply Changes to this Style". Perhaps in English it is "Apply changes" (which is still unclear, but not quite as bad). In Dutch that would be "Wijzigingen Toepassen" which is WAY too many letters for a button. But this button name is entirely misleading.

I formatted a Word file with specific Styles for each different paragraph. When I selected that text file for a Text Frame, none of those styles imported correctly and I had to manually reformat the entire 4 page document. Ugh!
I am wasting so much time conquering things that are not intuitive in Scribus. As said, I have used 3 different DTP programs, and NONE of them were this difficult to figure out. I know: read the manual. Problem is, I am on a deadline.

In April we have seen several fixes for specific annoyances, but only few and (small) improvements that deserve to be singled out:

  • Addressing some of the lost of content, when importing from LibreOffice Writer (ODT) documents
  • A script that fixes the Hairline width: https://bugs.scribus.net/view.php?id=9054
  • Hyphenation exceptions and ignore lists: allow to add and remove multiple entries at once
