Text and Typography / Re: Problem with small caps
« Last post by Meho R. on November 14, 2021, 01:00:45 am »
I guess the small caps font is exported as vectors (text converted to lines), which could be if there is a lock in the font for copy protection. Some time ago I have experienced the same problem with a commercial page layout, where the font could not be selected in the PDF due to some sort of copyright protection.

I don't think it's about copy protection. Rather, it seems something doesn't work as expected when using OpenType features ("Font Features" in Scribus 1.5.6.1). It's not just small caps that cannot be copied from PDF, but text figures (i.e. Old Style figures) too, if they aren't default figures for the font which is used. This is a serious issue in those publications which are intended for reading on screen and if it's expected to have full access to the text (e.g. courses, manuals, etc.).

Only incidentally related to this isuue: I do recall having a similar problem with XeLaTeX and OTF fonts, but not with LuaLaTeX.

Beginner Talk / Images not editing on DriveThruRPG format
« Last post by LeonardRobel on November 13, 2021, 11:07:06 pm »
Hi,
I'm trying to format pages for drivethrurpg publishing.

When I use Scribus on the latest MacOS or on Windows Vista, I can insert an image frame, drag in the image, and right click to get the menu that allows fitting that image to the frame. Good.

However, when I use the formats provided by drivethrurpg, the image gets unmodifiable it seems and Windows doesn't bring up that image editing menu any more. I tried on Mac, but I can't even insert an image frame at all there.

Any idea what's going on? I prefer to work in Windows if possible. Do I need to rebuild the Drivethru format myself in a new file (might be hard for me because I don't know scribus)? Is there just a setting somewhere I need to touch?

Yes, I already tried embedding the fonts, it didn't make a difference.

I just tried copying some text with small caps and pasting it somewhere and the text in small caps was not there.

Not only is the word PDF not in the selection, it can't be selected at all (nor can any of the other words in small caps).
Have you actually copied the text and tried to paste it elsewhere? It may be that the visual of the selection doesn't show the selection correctly, but it may contain the the actual text.

That is very strange.

Could you embed the small caps font in the PDF?

All of the text can be selected except the text in small caps, no matter what character or paragraph style I used.

No, the PDF is not password protected (I didn't add one).

From what I understand the screenshot shows the selection (in red), but the small caps of the word PDF are white because they were not included in the selection.

Can you select other text in the PDF document?
Is the PDF document password protected?

PDF Generation / PDF links not working properly
« Last post by Biblio on November 12, 2021, 08:31:31 pm »
Hello,

Adding links to another page of my document doesn't seem to work correctly. I temporarily changed my document's units to points so that I could choose the destination of the links precisely, but the two mesurements don't line up. The maximum number of pts I can choose when creating the link is far less than the equivalent of the height (for example) of an A4 page mesured in pts for all pages except for the one the link is located on (which seems to be normal). The preview window is far too small to be of any use except to see what page I'm on, and even then, it is not always the best. Basically, it seems like Scribus confuses the X and Y values for every page except for the one the link is on (which I first click on the link, it will look correct, but the values I inputted are not there, and if I change the page of the link, then the behavior I already mentioned happens, such that the width of the page is also taken to be its height).
