General Discussion / Re: Tables don't work in general
« Last post by Flaxx on May 17, 2022, 06:10:37 pm »
May I step in here as well, being pretty new in the forum? I like to support the original poster's view on the present table implementation in Scribus - it's the same in my version 1.5.8 .I cannot circumvent the present state by using LibreOfiice Calc and any kind of import it in a pictured format. The results are looking fine (mostly), but...

I'm working on Scribus-templates for a newspaper that should be also readable for people being visually handicapped or even blind using electronic means for printed media (not a problem) or such being able to handle electronic documents in PDF-format. Obviously, the latter is not possible when transferring tables into pure vector formats or even bitmaps. At the moment the mentioned newspaper (for internal use in a NPO, it's a club for aged people) is produced by using MS Word. This work, done each month, is a pure pain in the back and the volunteers doing this are all aged 80+. As I still believe that Scribus could make things much easier (my template is almost done), I would wish to have a better solution, than typing or copying the content of each cell, formatting the text line by line as required and finally the bringing the cell to the required line height.

I know that my version is a moving target and under development and I surely can live with the fact that the default line height (when selecting to change it) is always 1.058 mm. However,  I would be happy if anybody here has hints how to probably change the workflow to get usable results.

I'm using Scibus occasionally, being no professional at all and doing everything on a voluntary base as well.
Beginner Talk / How Add Inteface Themes
« Last post by scriber on May 17, 2022, 05:14:03 pm »
I all, I'm just compiled 1.5.8 Scribus version after almost one year of that provided through Flatpak (I'm on Linux Slackware OS just upgraded to last 15.0 release, on the old 14.2 new scribus do not build due to lack of new libs).
In this new build I noticed that some dark themes are not present... my question:

how can I add themes to Scribus?
Have to be "sourced" at build time or there is some way to add at run time after the program in installed?

Thanks in advance!

How do you enter U+2060 on an American keyboard? For example, to enter ASCII code I would hold down the alt key while typing 0176 to get the degree symbol. I assume U+2060 is unicode. Exactly what keystokes are required and are there one or two that must be held down while the 2060 is typed in?
Text and Typography / Re: Problem with symbol fonts

This is a huge problem for me, and I've not found a solution yet.

Has anyone found a practical way to use symbol font? It seems bizarre that for one font, I have to go to the glyph menu which starts with some preliminary menu, click on a folder to get the useful menu, which has a drop down list of all fonts, so I select symbol font, and then have to select "rho" from the list of characters. That's a lot of steps each time I want to use a Greek letter in an engineering text. Would be nice if the Scribus programmers would map the Greek letters against arabic characters so symbol font could work like all the other fonts. This would seem like a problem that comes up a lot and frankly is a mistake in the software.

Could there at least be some key-stroke short cuts to enter the letters from the symbol font?

What is a practical way to insert a Greek letter? The ones I use the most are lower case: beta, omega, rho and pi. By practical, I mean not having to go through the long series of menus.

I tried typing "rho" and then using find and replace to replace rho with the glyph for the Greek letter of that name -but Scribus appears to have no way to do that.

I'd like to try setting up a custom keystroke, but it appears custom keystrokes can only be setup for commands in the Scribus provided list.

This is pretty crazy that Scribus makes it so difficult to use Greek letters.

Hello all,

I just opened an old project from 5 years ago which was written ain Hebrew,
but now, it all appears from Left to right instead of Right to left
Is there a way of changing the unicode of all the work?

I tried downloading previous versions and it didn't help

I don't know if you are doing saving the file this way. but you my want to use the "collect for output" for saving the slaw files as it collects all your images and  .sla together in it's own sub folder. You wont have to do it manually then.

I really think this should be the default save action for scribus.

So, for weeks the team has been working on some 40 two-page documents into which the Yearbook to be was seperated.
I had two reasons for seperating the 80 page document:
  • Damage control. If something goes really bad, then it's not with the full document.
  • Performance. I wasn't sure how Scribus would hold on a image heavy 80 page document

Last week I've started merging all facing pages into the one single document.
I must say that this went without a single issue.
  • I created a new folder at the same level as all folders for the seperated facing pages
  • There I created a new all-in-one scribus document
  • Next, I copied all objects from the original documents into the all-in-one
  • Nothing broke, including the many external images (thanks to the relative path references)
  • I adapted the master pages to include a background image
  • And, O wonder! With 80 image heavy pages, Scribus is performing quite smoothly!
  • My decision to switch from the utterly sluggish MS Publisher to Scribus was a good one

Thanks. I got it working perfectly
That is what i wasn't sure about. In the paragraph styles there are two tabs in the style editor one for paragraphs and one for characters. You may just need to select the characters tab, or words you want to apply the style to, and just use the character styles and not make any changes to the paragraph styles. 'm not certain that this is how it will work as I've not tried it. it would be worth a shot for you to try.

Update: I tried editing a paragraph style to adjust  just character properties. then applying to just a few words in some text. Doesn't work.

Time for a feature request to the developers as this seems a very necessary option to have.
