Beginner Talk / Printing a booklet?
Last post by PaulL - March 24, 2025, 11:11:36 PM
Since Scribus is listed as the premier Linux alternative to Adobe InDesign, I made the mistake of assuming that there would be a "print booklet" feature.  Oops!

I want to print a booklet of eight half-sheet pages on both sides of two full-sized sheets of paper.
Since there doesn't appear to be any way to print two 5.5 x 8.5" pages on one 8.5 x 11" sheet (that would make things too easy! :D ), let me see if I have this right:

1. My original document is 5.5" wide and 8.5" tall.  So first, I have to create a document 11" wide x 8.5" tall, right?

2. Is there a columns feature to Scribus, or do I simply lay out guides manually and fit text boxes to them?

3. Can I drag the text frames from my 5.5 x 8.5" Scribus document into my 8.5 x 11" document?  I see there's a command to unlink them, which means I could drag them in the proper order, at least.

4. I am familiar with the process of imposing pages on signatures.  No help needed there.

And from there I assume it's just a matter of printing the pages in the correct order to form the booklet?  Or is there something I've missed?

If I had the time, I'd look at the source code and see what the chances are of adding in a booklet feature, but Easter is coming, and I have two Passion Gospels to print out, not to mention a number of service booklets. Even the ability to print two half-size pages on a full sheet of paper would be a blessing.  Oh, well.  "Cut and paste" used to be a literal term, maybe that's what I should do now.

I'm guessing you're on a linux distribution that has separated the help packages out.. perhaps due to our licence on those docs.

https://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Help:Welcome_Index has some format of it I believe. Quite out of date, as are the help docs honestly. But, the same theory applies but lots has changed.

Ask about the topic and people can answer here though.

I wanted help with a particular topic, so I clicked on the Help option and received this message:

QuoteSorry, no manual is installed!
Please see:
http://docs.scribus.net for updated documentation
http://www.scribus.net for downloads

To me, this sounds as though there's a manual available for download.  Am I wrong?  I can't seem to find it, and the Scribus Wiki doesn't appear downloadable, at least, not easily.

Go to the About Scribus Window and you should see the versions active with the build, per the below. What do the different versions say?

I've created a table with the UI.

I've found the commands "adjust table to frame" and "adjust frame to table" but I could not see any changes and I'm still wondering what they do.

In the scripter both commands are called when creating a table but there is no way to trigger them.
This having been said, it should be pretty easy to expose them.

But what are they doing?

you will probably need to share the .sla, if you want to get any help...

if you don't want the file to be world readable, you can create a ticket on https://bugs.scribus.net and upload it in a private comment.
then it will only be accessible to the developers.

you will also have to tell us what are the exact steps to trigger the crash.

it's probably due to a difference in the version of the library in charge of placing the glyphs.

if i recall correctly, it's about harfbuzz.

if it's the case, it's a know issue and there is no solution yet, except trying to get the same version of harbuzz on windows (you don't have a choice there: it's in the scribus installer you downloaded) and on linux (finding a distribution / version with the same version of harbuzz as in windows; or compiling the same version and compiling scribus with that)
