Beginner Talk / Importing text with formatting...
Last post by goldenbrown - April 24, 2025, 07:21:43 PM
Hey everyone,

So. I've been using Scribus for a while now, but recently I ran into a problem, and I'm not really sure what's happening.

I'm trying to import this text into Scribus, it contains formatting such as bold and italics (both applied directly to the text, not using character styles in the word processor). The file is also .ODT, and when importing, I'm setting the importer to ODT Document and making sure to uncheck the option "import text only".

My problem is: once the text is imported, and I try and apply a paragraph style to it, some aspects of the style (such as size, spacing, and alignment) are applied, but the font doesn't change, it remains the same as it was in the word processor (in this case Times New Roman).

I understand this is an override and I could (technically) solve the problem by using the "Remove Direct Paragraph Formatting" option, BUT...when I use this option, Scribus gets rid of the bold and italics too, which is not what I want.

I want to keep the bold and italics, apply the paragraph style and then search and replace the bolds and italics with the equivalent font(Bitter bold and Bitter italic) that I'm using for my paragraph style -- I think that's the way to edit text with formatting in Scribus, since it doesn't have a find and replace with character style option :(

The funny thing is that when I change the font of my text file to Arial instead of Times New Roman in the word process, and do the same process of importing and applying a paragraph style, Scribus works. It applies the paragraph style and the proper font (bitter regular), and I'm able to do what is described in the paragraph above.

But I'm confused. What's happening, why does this process work with Arial, but not with other fonts? Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

Thanks a lot for your quick reply!
I look forward to start formatting my book, so I am eager to get going. It is already half done in LibreOffice. I am glad to hear it should work with Zorin, which is a superb OS.

1) I tried your method, but it does not work. You're right, the cursor does not change. But I can not unlink, even doing what you said.
2) The import image thing, I create an image box. Right click on it, but the Get Image option is blank (not clickable). It is the same in the File menu, Import Image does not work, I can only Import vector graphics (the Import Image option is visible but light grey/not clickable).
(I am using Swedish language Scribus so I have to translate the names of the options)

Hey there,

I actually use Scribus with Zorin OS and it works pretty ok.

Scribus indeed has some bugs, but generally works ok. There's for sure room for improvement (like it urgently needs a find and replace with character style function. I need this so bad! ><) But about your problems:

It's hard to know exactly was going wrong without details but,

1. I'm guessing that what's confusing you is that when you click the unlink tool, your mouse cursor won't change. But the tool is active. What you should do is the following: select the last text frame BEFORE the frame you want to unlink. Select the unlink text frame tool, then click on the text frame you want to unlink.

2. About the images, I'm not sure what could be going wrong. Can you provide a little more detail of how you're trying to import them?

Beginner Talk / Beginner consider giving up - ...

I'm a new Scribus user, I had high hopes and I use other open source software that works well. But I wonder about Scribus. Is it full of bugs or am I just misunderstanding or not getting the documentation? I am working on a test document after watching some tutorials and trying to check the somewhat lacking manual. Does it work with Zorin OS?

I am considering giving up and instead useg Atticus or possibly InDesign. But if anyone can shed some light on the problems I have had, and it can be solved then maybe I can stay with Scribus.  :-\  Some problems are:

1) Why can I not unlink text boxes? The link tool works, the unlink tool just is unclickable. I have to delete a box.
2) Why can I not import images? I can only import vector graphics. It worked once, I managed to import a photo in the test document initially, but now it does not work. The get image option is blank.

I've created a ticket asking for using pt as the unit for the line stroke:

Please comment in here or in the issue tracker if you don't agree with it.

@WinchesterLyon in Scribus you can always (or at least really mostly) type the value with a unit and Scribus will convert it to the current unit used for that value.

You can also do calculations...

And use variables...

I had the same issue last time I tried Scribus and couldn't figure out how to change it to pt. So, I just didn't use it. It's strange, since no one uses inches as measuring unit for strokes. I've been using a online point-inch calculator since I re-installed (tools I never had when I tried it in 2008), but it would be great to have a fix for it.

Meeemaw, would it possible to share the two .sla files?

You can send a link in a private message, if you don't want them to be world readable.

i guess that the stroke should just be in pt.

or does anybody want it to be in the document unit?
i've checked libreoffice and a couple of DTP alternatives and all seem to be using pt...

if anybody sees a reason for having it in the document unit, are there other measurements where the unit by pt or the document unit?

and as a short time solution, you can always type the value as "1 pt" and it will be converted into the document's unit.

Quote from: AdmFubar on April 24, 2025, 04:04:48 AMin the main menu drop down, File/Preferences, in the window that opens look for Document Setup, in the General tab, Page size, there is a drop down menu for the units to use.

Thank you for your help, but I only want the unit for Lines to change to pt (points). I do not want the Ruler or anything else to change.
