MacOS / Scribus un-useable Signal 11
Last post by Madwolfie - Today at 03:10:16 PM
Hi.  PLEASE HELP !
We are producing a book with close to 400 pages of mostly text and some B&W images.  Occasionally when we delete a highlighted quote (in a separate text box) Scribus crashes with Signal #11.  I have tried numerous ways to get around this problem - changing text wrap of box, changing text box to polygon moving box to page margin etc. To no avail.
The crash is instigated as soon as you touch the mouse - after deleting or moving the said box.  I believe this has something to do with text flow as we have had this before and got rid of it by adjusting the length of the frame at the end of the text, but it does not work in this case.  Each chapter has its own text (in other words it is not the whole document that flow)- so the text will only flow over 6 pages max, then it is new frames and new text for the next chapter.
kind regards
Colin

Scripts and Plugins / Adjusting Table to Frame throu...
Last post by tanzeem - Today at 07:54:31 AM
I have created tables using Python Scripter API on Scribus1.6.2
Now i need help regarding adjusting table to frame. For my code:
      table = scribus.createTable(start_x, start_y, width, estimated_height, rows, cols, table_name)
with the script I also inserted content to cell, adjusted cellwidth/cellheight based on content and applied styles.
but found that manual adjustment of fitting table to frame and adjusting rowheight, column width is still needed.
Now i want this table to fit to frame using scripter api. Since i could not find the method in the web documentation. Also Scribus Desktop Help doesnt have tables documented.
How will i do it. When i did ripgrep, on the sourcecode i got:
  table->adjustTableToFrame();
How can i use this in the scribus script anyway.

Thanks for sharing the article!

Personally, I read it in two directions.

On the one side, there are trend that we might or should follow.

On the other side, most other software will be following those trends, and there will users who will not appreciate that. If we don't have the resources to do the same (or at least better), we can provide an alternative solution.

As an example, automation and scripting is for sure something where Scribus could shine, the question is: what changes would help new user in need for automation to adopt Scribus.

For cloud solutions, on the contrary, I have the feeling that Scribus won't be able to provide any viable solution in the foreseeable future. But Scribus might be able to solve the same problem that is solved by going to the cloud, in a different way, a way that will be liked by those who would prefer to not rely on the cloud.

Personally, I'd like to have some sort of a plan, in which direction Scribus could realistically go in the future, what needs to be done to get there, and to whom such a Scribus would profit.

I don't know if a PDF directly supports pixels as a unit. Regardless, I think it's good to be able to create a document in pixels (e.g., for screen sizes) and also specify everything in pixel dimensions when editing. The PDF output can then be converted to all supported units.

Use cases: Digital slideshows, export as images, document optimization for e-book devices.
I think an EPUB or AWZ export would also be nice. But for that, we need dynamic layout support.

As for item number 3, does the PDF format really support pixels as unit? Otherwise I cannot see why it would be useful in Scribus.

General Discussion / The future of DTP Software - T...

Over the past few days, I've been researching trends in the desktop publishing industry to find out what features and innovations might be relevant for Scribus.

During my research, I came across an interesting LinkedIn article that highlights some interesting trends and innovations. I'd like to use this thread to gather general trends and developments from which we can derive a long-term roadmap for Scribus.

The aforementioned article also addressed a few things that have already been discussed in the forum, on Reddit, or in the bug tracker.

1. Variable Font Support
It seems that variable fonts are becoming increasingly important. Especially because, as a designer, you have many more options and have to install fewer fonts.

2. Collaborative Work in the Cloud
There have already been some discussions about this here in the forum. Even though it can be very complex to implement, I still consider it an important feature for the future.

3. Interactive Content
I know Scribus focuses on print. However, I think opening up to digital could be a logical next step. This starts with adding "pixels" as a new unit and ends with embedding videos and audio files in interactive PDFs.

4. Data Visualization
It might be possible to extend the render frame so that CSV files can be rendered directly as charts.

Here's the article:

Let me know what you think of these ideas and feel free to add more trends here.

General Discussion / Re: Blurry text when printing ...

I have been working on this issue, and it prints perfectly on my small HP inkjet printer. The Ricoh MPC2503 printer works as a network printer and utilizes the PCL6 V4 driver for Universal Print in Windows 11, which appears to be the source of the issue.

That is a bit more than a standard laser printer. You are using a business class print center. There are extensive settings for these, depending on the features. I have printed from scribus to a Konica-Minolta system, and the driver for it has many settings. Sounds like  you are printing color, but not 4 color, check the printer driver for options.
Let us know what models exactly if you cant find a solution, we can check over the manual  and might be able to find what you need to change.

That is most likely a printer issue, the printer is not printing with black only in color mode, but are including the other colors (to create a "rich black").

I would check the settings of the printer to see if there is a setting to print black with only black (not rich black).

You may need to look under Advanced settings or something like that.

General Discussion / Blurry text when printing in c...

Hello to all and thank you in advance for your time!

I am experiencing a problem when printing in color, because the text appears blurry. However, when I print in grayscale, the text is sharp and clear. Additionally, I've observed that the black color does not print as a true 100% black when using color settings. This problem persists whether I print directly from Scribus or from an exported PDF.

How can I resolve this issue?

I am using a standard laser printer and Scribus 1.6.3.
