Title: Text Tab in Properties Pallete
Post by: Malsasa on March 27, 2015, 04:08:08 AM
Hello, developers.

I am a new Scribus user. I started Scribus +/- 5 years ago. At 2015, I started it again. Many things I accept as difficulties in Scribus, compared to GIMP and Inkscape, at the user interface. It is not a big problem after all. But I have pain in my hand by just designing brochures in Scribus but no pain in Inkscape. It is probably funny  but it is true. The main difficulty for me is too many clicks needed to interact with text frame. I will explain it.

Where Is The Problem
- Properties Pallete (F2)
- Text Frame

My Workflow
for int i=0; i<=many; i++
1) Place a text frame
2) F2
3) Click on Text Tab
4) Click on Font Selector
5) Click many times on Font Size
6) Click certain button to give text space
7) Click align
8) Go back into text frame, edit
9) If the text settings get errors, fix it by 1 - 7

Main Problem
The most heavy thing I feel on my Scribus workflow, is, I should open and open again Text Tab. Too many times for me so I get pain in my hand. Actually it is worthy for me to get pain for great layout artwork, but I want to get a clear workflow from you here.

What I Want
I want Scribus to remember my latest tab choice. In this case, Text Tab. And further I want

1) Properties pallete always viewed, no closing, no Esc = Close
2) Text Tab on properties pallete can be locked so it is always viewed, no clicking again

My Question
1) Is it true that I can not lock so the Text Tab is always showed?
2) How to make Properties pallete always viewed, and lock the Text Tab so it will always viewed first?
3) Is there any way to detach tabs in Properties Pallete into single small windows? If there is, I will detach Text Tab first.
4) Is my workflow above wrong? If wrong, I ask for your workflow. I am sorry, but please tell me your workflow. Thank you.
5) If it is true we can not detach tab and lock tab, how to make a feature request? Is it enough with this forum thread?

Thank you so much. It is my first post. I am sorry for my English. CMIIW.

hi malsasa

  • in scribus 1.5/1.6 the 'text' tab of the 'properties' palette won't close every time. (at least in the present prerelease it can be kept open...) – in the present stable release, you'll lose the focus on the 'text' tab every time you click at something else. (and you can't keep open more than one tab at the same time...)
  • working with paragraph styles could make your workflow more convenient for you.
  • if you don't close the 'properties' palette, it stays open. in my workflow there are some (really rare) moments without the pp on screen.
  • bugs.scribus.net (http://bugs.scribus.net/my_view_page.php) is the right place for feature requests – but make sure to check if the problems are already reported before opening a new ticket!

1) Great. Then I will try 1.5 first. So thank you.
2) Now I know the master key, paragraph style. Thank you, Sir.
3) Ow, but in 1.4.4 SVM it will be closed by Esc.
4) Affirmative.

Thank you. I am satisfied.

3) Ow, but in 1.4.4 SVM it will be closed by Esc.

Then don't hit Esc! :)

Just move it to the side and keep working with your document.

you shouldn't do this for such minor reasons!
you might run in real problems by working with an 'unstable' version in a production environment!

No, I can not. I am vim user, Inkscape user, Chromium/Firefox user, so Esc is a habit-in-the-blood for me. But I accept your advice.

Thank you. But actually I am not a designer. I create design so another can take over my design to create another great design. So working with bleeding edge software is a great experience for me. I am using currently Libreoffice 3.5 (but I have 4.3 in the same machine), and I have also Inkscape 0.48 (but I have 0.91 in the same machine, built from source). If I fail, it is okay. I can go back to 1.4.1 SVN again.
