Scribus forums / Hyphenation Behind an Object
Last post by Stranger - March 25, 2025, 10:32:41 AM
Hi Everyone,

I'd be very grateful if anyone could tell me how to prevent hyphenation of text placed behind ('around') an object (see attached image here 'Hyphenation Problem with Object').

If you look at the text on the lower left side, you'll see that some words are randomly cut off (AFTERNOON becomes AFTERN    OON; SOMETHING becomes SOM   ETHING...etc.)

Is there a way to prevent this (I would prefer the word be shunted to a full line instead of being cut-off haphazarly).

I have tried dehyphenating and reducing the length of words for hyphenation, but nothing seems to work.

I also attempted to tweak the 'text flow' around the object parameter but that didn't help either.

Would anybody have an idea how to do this?

Thank you.

Quote from: MrB on March 24, 2025, 10:06:05 PMGo to the About Scribus Window and you should see the versions active with the build, per the below. What do the different versions say?

Never heard about Harfbuzz before. As you can see attached, Windows' build Harfbuzz version is 8.3.0, and Linux's 2.6.4. So a huge disparity between the two. That's the issue, then?

Is there any other solution apart from compiling?

Je viens de télécharger la version 1.6.3, j'ai télécharger des polices sur Dafond et quand je suis la procédure pour les installer dans Scribus, je ne les vois pas dans mon dossier. Si quelqu'un à une solution. Merci bien

What procedure did you use? You can either install them into your system, for system wide use, or you can make a separate folder for fonts in your user directory, and tell scribus to look there for additional fonts.  See File/Perferences/Fonts, and select the Additional Fonts tab. You will need to restart scribus to see the newly installed font, and it builds the list of fonts available on startup.

Quote from: acli on March 20, 2025, 12:46:58 AMHello,

I just downloaded Scribus 1.6.3 and is currently trying to familiarize myself with it. I find that when I use the text tool to create a text frame, Scribus will draw, in addition to the frame itself, a nice blue shading inside the frame. When I resize the frame, it lags a lot.

I have a slow computer and I'm suspecting if I could disable the blue shading maybe there would be less lag. Does anyone know if there's a way to disable the blue shading? Thank you very much in advance!
What are your system specs? (Model, and amount of ram, and how old), plus the os.

(MrB) the blue shading he is talking about is simply the color in the text frame that scribus uses to make the frame more visible when sizing the text frame.

Beginner Talk / Printing a booklet?
Last post by PaulL - March 24, 2025, 11:11:36 PM
Since Scribus is listed as the premier Linux alternative to Adobe InDesign, I made the mistake of assuming that there would be a "print booklet" feature.  Oops!

I want to print a booklet of eight half-sheet pages on both sides of two full-sized sheets of paper.
Since there doesn't appear to be any way to print two 5.5 x 8.5" pages on one 8.5 x 11" sheet (that would make things too easy! :D ), let me see if I have this right:

1. My original document is 5.5" wide and 8.5" tall.  So first, I have to create a document 11" wide x 8.5" tall, right?

2. Is there a columns feature to Scribus, or do I simply lay out guides manually and fit text boxes to them?

3. Can I drag the text frames from my 5.5 x 8.5" Scribus document into my 8.5 x 11" document?  I see there's a command to unlink them, which means I could drag them in the proper order, at least.

4. I am familiar with the process of imposing pages on signatures.  No help needed there.

And from there I assume it's just a matter of printing the pages in the correct order to form the booklet?  Or is there something I've missed?

If I had the time, I'd look at the source code and see what the chances are of adding in a booklet feature, but Easter is coming, and I have two Passion Gospels to print out, not to mention a number of service booklets. Even the ability to print two half-size pages on a full sheet of paper would be a blessing.  Oh, well.  "Cut and paste" used to be a literal term, maybe that's what I should do now.

I'm guessing you're on a linux distribution that has separated the help packages out.. perhaps due to our licence on those docs.

https://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Help:Welcome_Index has some format of it I believe. Quite out of date, as are the help docs honestly. But, the same theory applies but lots has changed.

Ask about the topic and people can answer here though.

I wanted help with a particular topic, so I clicked on the Help option and received this message:

QuoteSorry, no manual is installed!
Please see:
http://docs.scribus.net for updated documentation
http://www.scribus.net for downloads

To me, this sounds as though there's a manual available for download.  Am I wrong?  I can't seem to find it, and the Scribus Wiki doesn't appear downloadable, at least, not easily.
