I had problems with hypenation too (running Scribus 1.5.8 on Ubuntu Linux).

What has worked on my computer:

-> I have added the dictionaries hyph_de_DE.dic and hyph_it_IT.dic in the directory /usr/share/hyphen. After that, I have been able to use hyernation on these languages.

-> On Catalan, I have had to change the name of the file hyph_ca_ES.dic to hyph_ca.dic and then it has worked as well.

Installation and Setup / How do I make a study Bible te...
Last post by ii - February 17, 2024, 06:48:58 PM
Greetings all!

I'm new to Scribus and looking for an alternative to Adobe InDesign.

Long story short, I'm trying to create a document that has a study Bible template where there is text on two sides of one page with some cross references in the middle and study notes at the bottom with some small lines to separate everything for the reader.

How would I go about this?  I didn't see one on the templates listed.

Thank you all!

As I noted in my original post, I am using this large PDF as my first experiment into book binding. Thanks to the suggestions above as well as a lot of reading I have converted the original A4 document to A5 and rendered the pages so that there are four A5 pages to each A4 sheet. They print out in the correct page order (I am only printing 5 sheets of paper each time I tested my work to save both paper and ink). These 5 sheets results in 20 A5 pages. Running Imposition software leaves all A5 pages in the correct order apart from the first.

On the first sheet of paper the right hand side has, quite correctly, page 1 printed on it. However the left side has page 2. This means that when all 5 A4 sheets are folded to make up a signature page 2 is at the back. It should, of course, be on the reverse of page 1. The remaining pages are all in the correct order.

Forgive me if my terminology is incorrect, this is just the start of my bookbinding learning curve. As the entire book will be very large, I intend to split it up into signatures each of 10 pieces of paper. I will add 2 blank A5 pages at the front for my use as well as some at the end to make the total page count divisible by 4. The problem is that the left page on the first sheet of paper of each signature will end up, when folded, as the last page of that signature rather than the second.

Try as I might I cannot see any way around this. For the avoidance of doubt I am running Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia using a Cinnamon desktop.

I am using the following software.

LibreOffice Writer
booklerimposer
PDF Arranger
PDFSAM

I seem completely tied up and cannot now find my way out of the trees. Can anyone help please?

if you don't know the name of the style, you look it up in the style editor or in the content palette : - )
for this time, you can apply it from there.
and next time you will be ready to go for the "apply style"!

i was also wondering, if it's a good idea to start with an empty list.

to be honest, i simply copied the behavior from the "action search".
but it would be easy to change it.

the main reason why i did not do it and i've finally left it as is, is that i don't want to animate the user to using the mouse.
if i show a long list, many new users will be tempted to scroll and click on the item, instead of "learning" to type in the filter and then confirm with the enter key.
since scribus already has a good way of applying the styles with the mouse (see above...) i thought that, for now, i prefer to leave like that.

but there is one thing, that i thought could be useful: showing the latest used style (or the latest few) when opening the dialog, in order to make it very fast to reapply the same style again and again.
(but i'm not sure that scribus has a way to "cache" this type of values...)

personally, i'd be happy to see this merged as it is now.
then let other users try it out and improve it further according to the feedback.

That's even easier than using the Ribbon in Word! :)

Oh, but wait... If I know I have made a style for something but can't remember the name of the style? It seems the list is empty from the start?

well, no, this is not about applying colors...
i'm simply using the styles called red and cyan because it's easy to see the effect.
(should i have used h1 and list?)

and, in my not so humble opinion, having to go and right click on the color list of the palette defeats the purpose of this tool:
it's about having a keyboard shortcut for applying a formatting!

but integrating the colors in the search style?
yes, that could be a good idea.
it should be possible to add some other formatting options too...

but one thing after the other.

right now, i'm really happy that i got the applying of text styles to work!

i will clean up everything (well, i think that the code is already pretty tidied up) and post a patch to the issue tracker:

now can you add this as a right click option for a color in the color palette?
