I am writing for mainly print, but also an ebook version.

I will probably give up on Atticus and demand money back (30-day trial). It seems it does not have options for the book sizes I want, which is A4 or slightly smaller. And I don't see that Atticus does anything more than a simple word processor really.
I have tried LibreOffice (totally awful), Abiword (crashed instantly), Calligra Word (totally unusable), Reedsy (too simple). I am at a loss.. Only Scribus remain.
Or I am actually considering getting an old MS Word, anno 2016 or older..

How would you do it in Scribus? - I have a 100 page docx document, pure text divided in 10 chapters. I need to get it into Scribus, from there add maybe 100 images and do some text editing. What would be an experienced Scribus users process?

Layout Issues / [1.6.4]Text doesn't appear in ...
Last post by PinkBunnyClub - May 03, 2025, 06:09:30 PM
Hi everyone,
I looked for an answer on the internet but couldn't find anything related to this specific case...

I started using Scribus a little time ago after taking an introduction course at uni. My first practice project is a gift: we plan on printing a single copy of a friend's book with extra illustrations.

Near the end of the book, I ran into an issue: the text frames are missing a huge chunk of text, nearly half a chapter, without any gap in the text flow. When checking the text editing window, I can see the text exists, it just got skipped for some reason. I was working on a previous version of Scribus, so I updated it to 1.6.4 and a bit of the missing text appeared, but not the whole thing.

Here's how the text frames look:

And here's the text in the text editor:

Additionaly, if I try adding characters after "Yes you did say that.", they do not show up in the text frame, but will appear in the text editor. The frames are properly linked together so I don't think it's a flow issue. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Thank you!

Quote from: Jensus on May 03, 2025, 01:07:24 PMI actually bought Atticus, because I was giving up on Scribus. But now that I am trying out Atticus, I feel it is very unintuitive and I don't like it at all. While Scribus is more complicated and I had some problems, it is more logically laid out. Not sure what to do now..
Atticus is geared towards ebooks, is that type of platform you are producing for?

Thank you for all your answers.
I am using Zorin OS 16.3. Scribus is 1.6.4.

It seems I can work around these problems, if I am going to use Scribus.

Like Goldenbrown said: "You can create sections in Scribus, but you can't rearrange them as easily as drag and drop." This is something that would be so great to have, to be able to rearrange chapters.
In my case I need to do some writing and editing in Scribus, because of the nature of the book (lots of images and diagrams, it is about electronics).

Windows / Re: 1.6 Installation Issue
Last post by a.l.e - May 03, 2025, 09:22:30 AM
as already written above:

  • pick one security solution and stick to it (windows defender is probably a good and safe choice)
  • only download scribus from official sources (or from sources you trust)

and if you have security issues, ask a reliable, trusted expert, not a forum in the internets.

p.s.: the official installers you downloaded from the sourceforge repository linked from the scribus official page should be safe, but the unofficial ones and the anti malware software you installed might not be safe.

Windows / Re: 1.6 Installation Issue

Respected Sir,

My PC has Quick Heal Seqrite Anti-Malware, and I was installing Scribus on my PC and got some issues.

ISSUES ARE:

1. My Windows 10 Defender is continuously blocking it.
2. My Anti-Malware or Antivirus is Denying Access to it because of Ransomware, which is more concerning for me

I tried 3-5 times, 2 times from an  Unofficial Source and 3 times from the Scribus's Official website(scribus.net). Please suggest to me ways through which I can solve it.

any other program have issue printing in color for you?

see if you can find anything in the printer setting that might make it print in a lower resolution, like a "draft" or "toner save" mode. I thinking that might have inadvertently been set for color printing.

I did find a "conserve toner" mode that prints in black and white only. is the low quality printing limited to text only? do photos and graphics print ok?

if the kvantum analogy holds, the question would be:

do you have any special theme installed in windows?

for Qt on windows?

I'm pretty sure this is in scribus, I have a similar issue when using kvantum. font lists in other programs  dont  have this issue when using kvantum. will need to figure out troubleshooting this to get you more feedback.
