first: sorry for the "agressive" captcha.

sadly, we get much spam and i fear that without it, it would be worse.

on top of that, you're asking lot of questions... let's try to give some answers

  • setting the page number: in the document setting, you can define the range of each section and, then, the number for the first page in the section
  • to get the page number from the master page to be on top of the items on the page, you need to create a new layer, put there the page number and set that layer on top of the layer with the content
  • the easiest way to make only the background semi-transparent, is indeed to add a rectangle behind the text frame. still, keep in mind, that scribus will put the transparencies in the PDF and your print shop might not be comfortable with it.

does it help?

hi jirib

scribus does not support impositioning. you need another tool for this.
...and your bug reports look as if you're printing direct from the .sla file. if this is the case, just stop it and print from a .pdf reader...

Quote from: jirib on May 13, 2025, 02:34:30 PMWe have either single page or facing-pages (two only);

There is nothing preventing you from creating pages of different width, the setting you are talking about is just how they are placed on the screen when working on them.

So you can create a back matter page, a narrow spine page and a front matter page. But of course they will still be individual pages, so to combine them we need something more.

This is not comfortable since if you would like to have an image over both cover pages the idea seems a bit odd...

I have switched to Scribus from Pagemaker, PagePlus, and Publisher. I am familiar with most DTP features. I find a number of things very non intuitive in Scribus. Like: how to I bold print or italicise only one word or sentence in a paragraph?
I have the front and inside covers as pages 1&2 and the same at the back, so that I can PDF the file easily and send it to the Online Printer. Consequently, my actual first page is numbered as page 3. I know how to fix this in all the no longer available (to me) DTP programs, but not in Scribus.
I have several pages that have a full (A5) picture as a background, which obviously looks really cool. Problem is, that covers up the page number in the Master Page and no amount of "move to front" seems to change that. I have solved that for now, by copying and pasting the page number on the master page to the actual page. That works, but there hopefully is a better way... I would also like to have several pages just have a background color, but I can't find tha option anywhere.
I have several pages where to keep the text legible against the full page background pic. I filled the text frame with white and set it to 60% transparency. Problem is, that turns the black text to grey (60% tranparancy). I have solved this by placing a white 60% transparent box behind the text frams (with no fill) and that works, but again: this is a workaround, not a solution.
Working with Styles is a disaster. I have not figured out a way to conveniently apply them and have them work consistently.

Why do the verification Captcha's have a line through them making it impossible to see the difference between an O and a G? I am logged in, why do I still have to verify myself with a verification letter system, and "I am not a robot" checkbox, answer a verification question (whick I had to look up and isn't listed on that site!!!), AND select several pictures from an array to post a question???

I've always thought of it as a separate document. Instead of separate pages, just one wide page that would include the front, spine, and back cover. Additional lengths for flaps that would wrap around the front and back cover for hardbound books.

It seems to me that the whole Scribus functionality with respect to cover is limited: we do not have spine feature; in Indesign, IIUC, they put some pages next to another, so you could have: back cover page, spine page, front cover page. We have either single page or facing-pages (two only); Indesign makes this three pages printed as "spread" - we do not have it.

Even if one would create 2 facing pages (with first page as left = outside back-cover), Scribus, IIUC, seems to have a deficiency: it can't print both pages as spread, and if you print it with bleeds having 0 size for inside, Scribus would ignore this and put crop marks on "inside" even the bleeds there is 0...

Or do I miss something?

This patch is deprecated and no longer compatible since we added the new page sizes to the New Document dialog.
