Still, any PDF viewer should be able to print an A4 PDF on A3 if the printer can handle A3. So if A3 is not available for the printer from the PDF viewer, that has nothing to do with Scribus.

As the old paper size list was huge, we created a limited default list.
Go into Preferences, Page Sizes, and ensure that A3 or any other size you want is in the Active Sizes list.

Thank you for the answers. I agree, there's something strange in this.

I am using macOS version 13.4.1 and Scribus version 1.5.6.1.

Even stranger that A3 isnt available for you. I'm thinking there might be something wrong with your install, but before you go through making changes there. I'd wait for other mac users to add their ideas.

What version of scribus are you using and what version of macOS?

That seems very strange. All PDF viewers I have used can choose from all paper sizes the printer supports and then you can set the scaling if it does not fit (use 100% scaling to print without scaling).

You should even be able to print an A4 document on A3 paper, either non-scaled or scaled up to A3 size.

But I don't know much about the printing system on Mac.

@jghali BINGO! You have the answer! Thank you
And it's all my fault for not understanding the difference with and without the .SVN suffix

I entirely understand the stability issues across development versions
I knew when I first installed Scribus 1.5x that I was taking a risk,
but that was quite a while back

I've now installed v1.5.8 to replace the SVN version
Win 10 & Win 11 now give the same results
(The fonts are identical between versions; only timestamps differ)

THANK YOU to the others who also replied
I followed all your suggestions, but @jghali found the clues in the right place
I've learned a lesson myself too

Beginner Talk / How to make an A3 project and ...
Last post by Kata - August 24, 2023, 12:22:00 PM
  Hi,

I am working with a poster that should be A3. Starting a new document this size isn't an option so I chose the custom size and gave measures of an A3 paper. Now that everything is done, I'd like to print it out, but there's no option in the print menu for doing so, nor do any of the pdf-readers seem to be able to do it. I have a Canon printer that can print on A3 and I am using MacBook. I would appreciate a lot any tip that could get me closer to solve the issue. Thanks beforehand!

Quote from: AdmFubar on August 23, 2023, 12:43:53 AMI bet the display screens have a different physical resolution, and they may not be calibrated in scribus. Open scribus and in the preferences, select Display, it is about halfway down the list, then in the section the opens look for the Display scaling tab. You will need a ruler for this part. Hold the ruler against the screen to match the one displayed and adjust the slider to align the ruler marks.
Once these is corrected you can see if the text is correct on the page.
This will most likely be a first step in analyzing this issue.

One small item noted in the .sla you posted, the text box is slightly to the right on the page. The right edge of the text box is past the right margin on the page. Was this intentional?
Actually scrap this answer... I had edited the original post to give a new solution and some how i messed up in posting it.
Here is my updated solution.

Search you system for this file; checkfonts150.xml, make sure scribus is not running, and rename this file, i usually just add -old to the end.
Restart scribus and let it rebuild this file, then load your document and see if this has fixed the situation.
