Title: Sample spoofed old newspaper front page scan
Post by: GarryP on December 26, 2014, 03:31:25 PM
Just for fun I thought I'd try to spoof a scan of an old newspaper front page from the 1980s.

It's not perfect - for example, I'm not totally happy with the background or pixelations - but I'm quite pleased with it as an experimental first attempt.

I tried looking online for good examples of actual newspaper front pages from the period I was looking at but, for whatever reasons, I couldn't find any scans that were particularly relevant. (They seem to be hidden behind paywalls but I'd be interested if anyone can feed me a good link to 1980s US newspaper front page images.)

Attached are a fairly low-resolution overview and the actual PDF.

In case you're interested in trying it for yourself:
* The fonts used are: Avenir, Baskerville, Dreamland, Good Times, Minion Pro, and Old London.
* The page background and distressing effects were achieved with images using layer masks created in GIMP.
* The image "pixelation" was achieved via a bit of JavaScript with Paper.js.

If you have any suggestions as to how it could be improved feel free to shout up.

P.S. Give yourself a pat on the back if you can figure out what movie I've taken as inspiration. If you can't figure it out then you need to watch more classic 1980s Sci-Fi!
