As for item number 3, does the PDF format really support pixels as unit? Otherwise I cannot see why it would be useful in Scribus.

General Discussion / The future of DTP Software - T...

Over the past few days, I've been researching trends in the desktop publishing industry to find out what features and innovations might be relevant for Scribus.

During my research, I came across an interesting LinkedIn article that highlights some interesting trends and innovations. I'd like to use this thread to gather general trends and developments from which we can derive a long-term roadmap for Scribus.

The aforementioned article also addressed a few things that have already been discussed in the forum, on Reddit, or in the bug tracker.

1. Variable Font Support
It seems that variable fonts are becoming increasingly important. Especially because, as a designer, you have many more options and have to install fewer fonts.

2. Collaborative Work in the Cloud
There have already been some discussions about this here in the forum. Even though it can be very complex to implement, I still consider it an important feature for the future.

3. Interactive Content
I know Scribus focuses on print. However, I think opening up to digital could be a logical next step. This starts with adding "pixels" as a new unit and ends with embedding videos and audio files in interactive PDFs.

4. Data Visualization
It might be possible to extend the render frame so that CSV files can be rendered directly as charts.

Here's the article:

Let me know what you think of these ideas and feel free to add more trends here.

I have been working on this issue, and it prints perfectly on my small HP inkjet printer. The Ricoh MPC2503 printer works as a network printer and utilizes the PCL6 V4 driver for Universal Print in Windows 11, which appears to be the source of the issue.

That is a bit more than a standard laser printer. You are using a business class print center. There are extensive settings for these, depending on the features. I have printed from scribus to a Konica-Minolta system, and the driver for it has many settings. Sounds like  you are printing color, but not 4 color, check the printer driver for options.
Let us know what models exactly if you cant find a solution, we can check over the manual  and might be able to find what you need to change.

That is most likely a printer issue, the printer is not printing with black only in color mode, but are including the other colors (to create a "rich black").

I would check the settings of the printer to see if there is a setting to print black with only black (not rich black).

You may need to look under Advanced settings or something like that.

Hello to all and thank you in advance for your time!

I am experiencing a problem when printing in color, because the text appears blurry. However, when I print in grayscale, the text is sharp and clear. Additionally, I've observed that the black color does not print as a true 100% black when using color settings. This problem persists whether I print directly from Scribus or from an exported PDF.

How can I resolve this issue?

I am using a standard laser printer and Scribus 1.6.3.

Text and Typography / Re: html import of em spaces
Last post by a.l.e - March 20, 2025, 05:23:48 PM
i guess that just typing an em space should work...

i had a look at the html importer and a/ it looks rather old and b/ i could not understand how it has been built...

the strange thing: emdash does work, emspace gets lost, and there is no trace of entities handling in the html reader...

Quote from: agilulfo on March 20, 2025, 09:58:52 AMI discovered that it is not even possible to import text file (libreoffice odt, word doc-docx, txt) but only vector files (pdf, corel draw, libreoffice draw, adobe illustrator, etc).
Why?

Because you are using the wrong function.

Create a text frame. Right click and select Get text. Then you can import odt, word, txt etc into the text frame.
