General Discussion / Nowhere to complain? Mention f...
Last post by abrogard - Today at 01:44:20 AM
I just tried to make a post in beginner topic and it wouldn't let me. Wouldn't respond to 'another image' and kept telling me I had it wrong.  Though I didn't.
Try again. here's the post I tried to make:
I just got it.
First off it just looked like MS draw or something.
then I tried pasting in some text. didn't work.
then i opened a text box and tried again. didn't work
then i 'inserted' and a whole file came in.
so then i tried to embolden a heading.
didn't work.
then i googled and found that won't work.  got to select a different font.
now's a good time, I think, for me to get a 'heads up'
what do I want this for?
which software is it an immediate improvement on?  which thing has it 'done better than they do'?
or if you like: which costly software does it do the same as but free?
or which need does it address that currently isn't met?

not arguing with it, you understand? not trying to put it down at all.  just simply trying to get it straight what i'm into here.  so's i don't ask what it perhaps can't deliver and perhaps was never meant to deliver.

Must admit I do very little 'desktop publishing'  mainly I do it when I have to send formatted submissions to my online school.  I find Word and Libre Office often quite bloody annoying there. Improvement on that would be good.

The other 'need' I have is for a handy popup thing to help me take notes in a format that is very useful.  I will try to explain a bit:

What i do is take many notes at each computer session. I copy links and copy text.  I want them in a document that i can open with click and quickly (unlike, you see, word and writer) and that keeps the info as neatly and clearly as possible.

notepad (we're on windows here) is good for the 'popup' aspect.  But it has some failings - forget what - that make it not good enough for me. so I use PSpad.  That's better.

Nearly good enough. Can write code in it as easily as take notes. Can have clickable links.

BUT one thing:  I cannot embolden and I can't change colour.  that means I can't make distinctions.

This thing here looks/looked like it might address that for me.

But after this short test I'm thinking perhaps I am wrong, have the wrong idea, it is not fit for that job.

What say you?

Windows / Adobe Fonts (Creative Cloud su...

Relevant to Windows 10, Scribus 1.5.8 (installed as stand-aloe) and 1.4.8 (installed with PortableApps).

I have an Adobe subscription that give me access to the "Adobe Fonts" service. It works well in that when a font is enabled through Adobe it become available to the OS and installed programs like MS Office, Libre Office, PDF-XChange and other but not Scribus.

The other apps on the system detect the new fonts automatically but Scribus does not see them. Using the "additional fonts" feature of Scribus I have:

1) Directed Scribus to look in the super-secret location where Adobe Fonts stores the fonts (\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CoreSync\plugins\livetype\r\ in case you wondered). Scribus does not detect the fonts.

2) The font files described in point (1) have numerical file names and no file name extension. The files can be renamed with an extension (.ttf or .otf) and installed into the OS as normal. The rest of the OS and installed programs detect the new font but not Scribus.

3) The moved and renamed font from point (2) can be put in a custom directory elsewhere and use the "additional fonts" feature to direct Scribus to look in the directory and still, Scribus does not detect them.

I have tested that I am doing this right by directing Scribus to another directory created by myself containing fonts from elsewhere. It works as it should.

Any ideas?

Note I am not trying to circumvent or abuse the license terms with Adobe Fonts. I just want them to work with Scribus.

Quotehaving a good documentation in one place might be longer to read, but at the end one should know about all the available options.

Even better is when you have a documentation with a list of functions that defines colors for different color modes.

From function name, user knows what function needs as parameters and what particular function does.

for what i'm concerned, the function could also accept the case where one single parameter is given:

defineColor(name, r_c_rgb)
: - )

starting with a # and having four or seven chars...

the more i write about it, the more i start believing that it could be a nice simplification.

the problem is that currently, one has not really an overview of what is possible. you pick a function that somehow fits your need and then look for a website that converts the values you have into what you think scribus is requesting.

And what about a hex color values, like "#ff8800" or shortly "#f80"...

sorry, i did not check what the ...Float variants do.

now that i've read your explanation, i think that the name is terrible.
i (wrongly) understood that you wanted to get rid of them (i naively assumed that the "normal" function passes the values as int and the float ones as... float, numbers with decimals).

well, in my extreme proposal, we would then need a second function or a second named argument in the unique function (with a better name than "Float").

i still think that the basic form

defineColor(name, r_or_c, g_or_m, b_or_y[, k = None])
will cover most usages (since we don't have RGBA) and the named argument offer access to all previous features in a "self-documenting" way.
it would even be possible to add support for HLC colors in the scripter, without adding a new function : - )

but, as said, it's an extreme proposal and i will not fight to get it through.

personally, i think that we should rather make it possible to add colors in the palettes, at the same place where you can pick a color.

i think that this is might be a future goal of the indigo UI project.

While on the subject of colors...can the color and fill window be made dock-able? Would like to see a one window to a selected set of colors and another that is for colors being used in a document, with drag and drop to add colors to you current document. ;)

Hi a.l.e

What about a float?

defineColorCMYK("name", c, m, y, k)
Defines a new color "name".
The color Value is defined via four components: c = Cyan, m = Magenta, y = Yellow and k = Black.
Color components should be in the range from 0 to 255.

defineColorCMYKFloat("name", c, m, y, k)
Defines a new color "name".
The color Value is defined via four components: c = Cyan, m = Magenta, y = Yellow and k = Black.
Color components are floating point values between 0 and 100.
