General Discussion / adjust automatic text position...
Last post by brc2nyawj1 - August 27, 2024, 12:08:24 AM
I think this has been discussed a few times with no resolution:

https://forums.scribus.net/index.php/topic,4544.msg20926.html
https://forums.scribus.net/index.php/topic,3864.msg18347.html
https://forums.scribus.net/index.php/topic,1972.msg9016.html

Since those dance around the core issue, I'll explain my problem:

I have an existing book ~300 pages, with a lot of styles and things that were dialed in.
I want to re-use it on a new book, to avoid having to setup everything again.
There is only one change I have made: I've adjusted the margins ever so slightly (2mm down)
I understand that changes to existing text boxes will have to be done separately. This isn't about that. it's about the creation of new text boxes using autotext.
I have removed all the pages and started fresh.
When I create a new page, put in content, and then create more and have auto-text kick in, every one of the new pages it creates has the auto-text created text box set to the old margins, not the new ones.

I'm also a software developer, so I started diving into the XML (far easier than trying to figure out the scripting).

But for the life of me, I cannot tell what is actually setting the auto-text default text-box boundaries.

Can somebody help me here? What is its reference point? I deleted all of the pages, so I thought it'd just start new with some new reference point...

And separately: Why isn't this just something automatically adjusted if you change margins? It seems like a bug, TBH, that it keeps some ghost memory of old settings. But I suspect somebody will claim it as a feature. But it's a bug.

i saw the file and detected the pagination problem.
in the 'sections' dialog you told scribus how to format the pagination for the different parts of your document. but you missed the part to place them on the master pages.

i'll send you your document back by pm. (with pagination on one master page)

for this i would just uncheck the 'show' box.

Thank you. I got the document. Yet I am encountering issues both on the document you sent, and replicating your steps on the original one.

First, the one you sent over the page numbers on "Normal Left" are triplicated. You can see one example: "iviviv" instead of just "iv."

https://ibb.co/fd6qS12

I am not sure if this was intentional on your part, because (for the second issue I'm having) when I go to Edit -> Master Pages to investigate, there isS no indication of anything having been done: no text box that you have referenced:

https://ibb.co/ry7sW6C

I also tried doing the steps as you have described them on the original document. I went to Edit -> Master Pages -> Normal Left, created a text frame, and then went to Insert -> Character, but all of the options are greyed out/disabled:

https://ibb.co/grjHtbD

Also...

Does it matter that I didn't know that Normal Left and Normal Right master pages existed? Or are those "defaults" and will always apply?

Thank you for your help in this matter.

Yeah, I have been ungrouping and regrouping, but I was hoping there was another option that would save time.

The "normal" solution usually is to place the page number text frames on Master pages, and for pages where you do not want the page number to appear you use Master pages without the page number text frame.

But maybe using None for number style is supposed to achieve the same thing.

I think the X in the number text frame is overflow? I.e. the page number does not fit in the frame.

Quote from: utnik on August 25, 2024, 06:43:45 PMi wonder why the style is set to 'none' – and why almost all the sections are defined in reverse order. but that might not really be connected with your problem.
the box with the cross looks like a text overflow. this happens, when the text box is too small, but sometimes you think that it is big enough but it doesn't match with the baseline grid...
if i could see your document, i might be able to help. (but i'm sailing at the moment and my only internet access is when we are in a harbour...)

I hadn't even seen the Reverse thing. I de-checked all of those boxes, but it didn't change anything (I didn't think it would).

That would be great. As this is a book that is going up for sale, I am sending you a PM of the file.

Beginner Talk / [SOLVED] Page Numbers not show...
Last post by PelesDaughter - August 25, 2024, 05:57:57 PM
Hi folks. I'm almost finished with formatting my book, and have been assigning page number with Sections, but baffled that no page numbers are appearing. What is even weirder is that for a second, maybe while I had the Sections editing box still up or maybe not, I saw them, but then they disappeared. I have tried closing and re-opening the program. I also browsed around in the search and found some topics with similar titles, but wasn't able to garner a solution. Any advice?

(the first image shows a very mysterious x in a box on page 3 in the corner where page numbers should be. this is the only page in the document with such a box. It is also a page which I have designated as having no numbers)

After you move your group, ungroup and group them again.
