Title: PDF X/1-a:2001
Post by: Wena on September 01, 2011, 08:22:15 PM
Is there any way I can produce PDF X/1-a:2001 in scribus?

I know that there are other ways of doing so and that Scribus 1.5 will have it, but several members of this forum must have ways to do so.

hi wena

unfortunately, the only way to generate pdf/x-1a with scribus is with the version 1.5 – but you can install 1.4 and 1.5 parallel and run scribus1.5 only for the final pdf/x-1a generation.

Thanks, you are indeed a busy person.

Where do I get a Scribus 1.5?

Every where I have looked suggest it is not available to date.

Have we a download falsity tor it?

Then do I run the text in the Sribus 1.4 format or a PDF.

Wena.

hi wena

you can find daily 1.5 packages for ubuntu at http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Download (http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Download).
for all other operating systems you have to compile from the source code (wich you will find under the same link...)
if your printshop has scribus (some do – most don't...), perhaps they may generate the pdf for you.

Quote from: Wena on September 02, 2011, 03:36:18 PMThen do I run the text in the Sribus 1.4 format or a PDF.

i would write the text in a text editor like libO writer, ms word or something similar, then import it into scribus. (with libre office or open office all the formating will be imported as well...)

utnik, Thank you for your help.

Taking you address to get the source code and CMake to compile on my Windows XP computer , which I did. The only reference I found there was this link "svn://scribus.net/trunk/Scribus - Scribus 1.5.0svn (trunk)". But no download link.

Following that there was another link http://scribus.net/websvn/listing.php?repname=Scribus  Their was a list there but no download for Scribus 1.5. only a long list of developments.

Have I miss understood your instructions.

Has anyone got a direct link to v 1.5  download?

hello wena

i don't think i can help you – i'm not really familiar with ms windows...

...this long list are the files you need to compile the program. the download of the whole tree of files starts when you put:   svn co svn://scribus.net/trunk/Scribus yourUnstableScribusdirectory   into a command-line interface (maybe subversion is required for this...)
after you have the files on your hd, i have no idea how to compile it for your system – you will need infos from someone who knows the windows platform...

The info is probably in a file called BUILDING among the files downloaded from svn...

I have now set up an  ubuntu on a computer and have taken the advice of this thread to get Scribus v 1.5 from http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Download. But there was no download function. Only a list. Now  utnik am I on your expertise line.

hello wena

the link to the archive is svn://scribus.net/trunk/Scribus (http://svn://scribus.net/trunk/Scribus) but the best way to download the whole bunch of files is to put:   svn co svn://scribus.net/trunk/Scribus yourUnstableScribusdirectory   into a command-line interface – as i wrote before...

but for ubuntu there are packages under https://launchpad.net/~scribus/+archive/ppa (https://launchpad.net/~scribus/+archive/ppa). there you should find a build for your linux version (to be installed with ubuntu software center).

None of the above address gives a download link for Scribus 1.5 for my Ubunto computer or my Windows XP computer.

utnik there must be something out of place? I have even registered with "Lanchpad" to see if that will help but NO.

I am advised to get Scribus v 1.5. I have surcharged the net for it with no results, why is that?

hello wena

i just tried to install the newest build on my ubuntu system – and it worked...

first you add   deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/scribus/ppa/ubuntu natty main   as a source to your ubuntu software center (for me it was 'natty'. if you have the newest ubuntu build, it's the same – otherwise insert 'maverick' or 'lucid'...)
after that, the ubuntu software center will find 'scribus(trunk)' as a possible application to install.
install it...

for me, this procedure worked – i hope it's the same for you...

utnik

edith: don't press the link, copy all from 'deb' to 'main'...

Hi All ...

The Ubuntu Software Centre comes with a link to Scribus already prepared. If you've just installed Ubuntu, wena, open the Software Centre, click on Graphics and then on Publishing. You'll find two options - one for stable Scribus and one for Scribus NG. The last one is the one you're looking for. Just click on Scribus NG, then on the install button and everything is done automatically for you.

Hope that helps ...

We will see.

unfortunately this is not what wena needs – the stable one is 1.3.3.14 and ng is 1.4.0rc-something. but for pdf/x-1a she needs 1.5.

i hope, she has it already.

Thank you utnik I had been able to get Scribus 1.5 last night. I am a green horn using ubuntu and setting things up in it. Fortunately for me I have a lodger in my house who uses ubuntu and he took all the stress out of it.

I played about for 2 hours and not had a crash! so fare it looks great but now comes the steep learning curb!!!

Any tutorials, videos are best for me?

May be a new thread on this matter may help mi and others as developments of it take place.

Quite right, utnik - I thought mine was 1.5 but, having checked again, it's 1.4. Sorry if I misled. But happy wena finally got what she needed.

Thank  you two, the word NEED comes out clear in both of your posts. I would not have gone to all the trouble to set up an other computer if if wasn't for the NEED.

I really have to much work on my hands to volunteer have to learn a new program.

Now having worked a little with 1.5., I am beginning to feel comfortable with it, don't forget I am a beginner with   Scribus. My next big step is producing book cover in PDF X/1-a:2001, so fare I have not seen any instructions to help me over that one.

The printing company have informed me that my files need to be in PDF X/1-a:2001 and I am tolled that Scribus v1. 5. can produce such a fail.  That is the information I need.

I do understand that v1.5 is rather new, but it is there some where.

i know, this is a real development version (i don't really know how stable it is...), so i recommend to work in scribus 1.4.0rc5 and use the version 1.5 only to generate the final print-pdf.

you can install 1.4.0rc5 parallel to 1.5 on your ubuntu machine.
otherwise you have to be careful about your fonts – don't use fonts, that aren't installed on the ubuntu or you will run into problems...

@wena: it's not adivsable for people who don't follow the scribus development to use scribus 1.5 for daily work...

but you can use it in a post production step, as an example for for creating a pdf X/1-a file. just take care not to save your .sla while working with 1.5!

1.5 is mostly stable but there are some limits (most of all: the undo for text has been developed for 1.4 after branching out 1.5 and has not been ported yet to 1.5) and its stability may depend on the latest commit for a new feature.

@utnik: why shouldn't one use fonts which are not installed system wide? just add them in scribus and don't forget to include them into the pdf! ... or am i missing something?

In the next day or two I will attempt to put the book cover together, that has to have the graphics in  PDF X/1-a:2001.

I am rather nerves of the whole thing. At the same time I will need to have the colors correct.

I have figured out a way to do 99% of the work in Scribus, and then for teh remaining 1%, you can go to FedEx/ Kinko store to rent a computer for about 5 or 10 minutes at 0.30USD per minutes (that is a total of 1.5 USD to 3 USD) to easily convert the file to PDF X/1-a:2001 format.

No special technical knowledge is necessary.

Our book is based on Scribus v 1.3.6, and I have both Scribus v 1.3.6 and Scribus v 1.4.

Everything in the book works for both  Scribus v 1.3.6 and Scribus v 1.4.

Most if not all of it applies to Scribus v 1.5 also.

You can learn how to design book cover by just looking through the color screenshots in our book. We use our book as an operation manual in our office also. Our goal is to make Scribus as easy to use as a telephone.

I wonder if any one on the forum has an A5 book template cover that I could have a go with before doing a real one?

hello wena

of course most of the books are different from the examples in a manual. what chen tells you, is how to deal with the specifications given by your printer.
first you have to know the dimensions of your front- and back cover and the spine width (which depends on the number of pages and the paper whight). with this you have the cover size (2 x cover width + spine width / cover hight).
then you can add the bleed area (given by the printer).
for the safety margins i don't add guides, because i give more room for that anyway...

you have to make your own cover. but you can follow the steps in chens book – so you won't miss something essential...
