Beginner Talk / Using Scribus with children in...
Last post by WilkoatWestfield - June 15, 2024, 11:19:08 PM
I am a UK primary school teacher and intending to use Scribus in the classroom to cover the very simple basics of DTP.

I'm following an accredited curriculum resource that many UK schools use from the National Centre for Computing Education called TeachComputing.

A unit of work introducing the basics of desk top publishing for Year 3 pupils (that's 7 and 8 year olds) which was based around Microsoft Publisher has just been replaced with a unit now using Canva (free education accounts are available to schools).

I would much rather use Scribus and wondered if anyone here is aware of any resources already specifically made for children / younger users, or has any experience if doing so and any issues I should be aware of.

Thank you all!

Quote from: a.l.e on February 22, 2019, 10:44:47 AMline 100 of your script:

i had to check the documentation: setMargins() sets the margins of the document, which will be used... in a way nobody would think of: when you create a new master page...

the scripter does have a getPageMargins(), but no setPageMargins().

i think it should not be that hard to add that function (c++ code is needed) but i would first list all functions that are needed to make it easy to calculate a typographic grid.

from my point of view it almost needs a way to get set the row and column guides and their gutter...

what else is needed?

p.s.: of course, the commands will only be added to the development version 1.5.x not the stable one 1.4...

Hi everyone,

Quite new with Scribus. Very interested by the project and the scripting possibilities.
I would like to set up the page margins with a script, is that possible ?

As I understand setMargins has another purpose.

scribus.setMargins(left, right, top, bottom)
I would be glad if someone has a tip.

There was once upon a time a video which seems to explain this issue. The link I found is: Video tutorial three ways to apply styles. Unfortunately the video vanished. Some idea where to get it from ?

great. thx a lot. Now I found it. Therefore I can replace the &HL; which means Headline with something else. This works fine. Now my doubt: in order to create from this &HL; a headline in scribus with the style for headlines, what do I need to insert in the text ?
Thank you very much for your help !!!!!!!!!

There is an Importer second from the bottom left. Choose Text Filters. With your file to import selected, click ok. Then another window will pop up and allow you to set up the filter actions.

Thank you very much for your answer. Exactly this import filter I am looking for. I am using Scribus 1.5.8. I am doing the following: File --> Import --> Get Text. In the window which now is open I do not find the import filter. Maybe I am looking at the wrong place ? I am sure I am missing something ... but what ?
Thx a lot

When importing, there is an option to choose the Import Filter, and you can choose the one called "Text Filter". It enables you to process the text as it is imported. This might be what you want. It might be what you are referring to in those old instructions. I don't think anyone worked on that much in that time so it should still work as described.
