well, it is not really solved.
colors for the actual document are edited when the document is open. but you have to close all your documents before you create colors for your standard palette (for the documents you create afterwards...)
the fact that the 'item tools' don't list the colors of the actual file is a bug and should be reported here. (it lists the standard palette which is defined for your new documents...)

Today I spent a lot of time to figure out how to expand the short list of colors available in > Document Setup > Item Tools > Lines (for example).

I am using Scribus for over 10 years, and I needed a new forum thread to be reminded that I have to close all documents, before I can make (certain) changes to the general preferences. And I need to change those general preferences before I can then tune my custom document preferences.

There are probably technical reasons for those limitations. I love Scribus but when I want to do a document (or have a deadline) I can hate those details where the hints or documentation is missing.

Scribus has got so many un-intuitive details. And often we wonder, where to put all those instructions. In this case, put them where the user will need them. Example:

When I try to pre-define a "line" for a specific document, and when Scribus is giving me only ten colors and no way to change those, then a bottom-entry in the colors-list could be "more colors". And when I click on that, then a text would come up and explain that I first need to close all documents, then adjust the generec preferences, then re-open my active document and then I can tune my line colors for custom color from my document setup.

Our work flow is such, that we often save our document in progress, each under a new name. So we are glad that Scribus does not bloat all our versions will all those bitmaps.

If we could further reduce the file-sizes by linked SVG rather than embedded, that would help us. I see no disadvantage, since all users have to learn about bitmap-linking and about the feature "collect for output" anywy.

Thank you @AdmFubar, your reminder about "no open documents" allowed me to extend the list of available colors in the "Item tools".

Then when I open my document, I need to set my custom line color via Document Setup. And now at last, the color I had defined earlier, is available.

A rather indirect solution, but I am happy, as there are many lines to do. I had mentioned.

So where can I now mark this question as [solved]?
Layout Issues / Re: 3 fold brochure
Last post by MZaske - March 24, 2023, 11:10:16 PM
I agree that you must talk to your print shop. They will most likely have a regular three-fold in their program, and that will be for a regular price. Typically they will provide you with a PDF for self-download where you can see their layout, dimensions, bleeds, color-profiles etc.

If you want to tweak your flyer and want to insist on non-standard locations for folding, you need to check availability and pricing first. And if they agree to follow your custom ideas, they will ask for your print-run and give you a quote (which you might rather not like). And only in this case, will they let you know if and how you need to mark your document.

No worries: Nobody will want to argue with you how you produce your documents - as long as you provide valid PDF, according to their specs. We are doing this with Scribus for years, creating PDF for commercial printing. And we never had discussions and we never had any document refused because of PDF-specs. (We also do pre-flight-checks, using Adobe Acrobat and if we ever had issues, it was not Scribus, it was my settings.)

You can go to any forum: They will always sing the same chorus: "Speak to your printer!" And guess why: Because with good communication everybody will be happy, and no paper or money gets wasted. Even affordable online-print-shops will have comm-channels open, because they also want to avoid frustrations and waste. Every time we make contact, we learn something. You got nothing to loose.

Colors can only be edited without a document open.  From the drop down edit menu, select colors and fills. You add or import the colors you need.

This answer does not apply to my question.

I have to make so many lines, that for each new line I want to pre-define its color and style etc. This is done in Document Setup > Itam Tools. But - as I wrote - the window does not give me the colors I need.

Select the line you wan to start with and press F2 (Properties). Window should open, and come to the top, about 2/3 down the window will be a drop open option colors.
