Beginner Talk / Style and font size
Last post by kees - Today at 08:13:49 PM
Hi,

I created a style and changed the font and the font size.
When I apply the style to a part of the text, the font changes but the font size stays the same.
Am I forgetting something?
I am using the Scribus 1.6.2 Appimage on Linux Mint.

Beginner Talk / text not appearing in text box
Last post by inkfountain - Today at 07:09:27 PM
I'm so frustrated. I have been working with Scribus for a few days & made a number of documents. Today I made a new template to start from, but I can't get my text to show up when I type in a text box. If I copy and paste a text box from a different document, it works. When I type in the text editor window, everything shows up. However, nothing shows up on the document itself. The settings for text are the exact same as they are on the documents where I can type in the text. I have restarted the program, closed and opened the documents, and nothing seems to work to get text to show up in a text window in a new document. What else can I do?

I did, but that did nothing.
I deleted everything in the templates folder and started over and that worked.

Nice to read your thoughts.

The only thing I can contribute for now: I'm not sure if it's worth to get into SVN, if you don't know it yet.

You won't interact with the Scribus' own SVN server, except for pulling updates that have been merged into the official code.
If you're proficient with Git, stick with it and focus on working on the features you need.

At the end of the day, the only way for you to propose patches will be through attachements in the bug tracker and, for that purpose, it does not matter if you got the code (and manage it) with SVN or Git.

And, currently, most people (if not everyone) proposing patches to the team is using Git: the "mixed" workflow is well  tested : - )

hi inkfountain

did you tell scribus where to find them? ('preferences' → 'paths' → 'document templates')

Hello,

You are encountering a common issue with Scribus on Windows when using LaTeX to render mathematical formulas. The problem you're describing, where the red box with the temporary PDF filename appears but not the rendered formula, often points to issues related to file paths, permissions, or Scribus configuration. Here are a few steps and checks that might help resolve the issue:

1. Check File Paths
Ensure that all file paths used by Scribus and LaTeX are correct and do not contain spaces or special characters. Scribus on Windows sometimes has trouble with paths that contain spaces. Try placing your document and temporary files in a directory with a simple path (e.g., C:\Scribus\).

2. Verify LaTeX Installation
Double-check that MikTeX is correctly installed and that Scribus can find it. Sometimes the path to MikTeX may not be correctly set up. Ensure that the MikTeX executables are included in your system's PATH environment variable.

3. Permissions
Ensure that Scribus has the necessary permissions to access the directory where the temporary PDF files are generated. If Scribus cannot read these files, it might not render them correctly.

4. LaTeX Configuration in Scribus
Make sure that Scribus is correctly configured to use LaTeX:

Open Scribus.
Go to File > Preferences > External Tools.
Check the paths for pdflatex and xelatex to ensure they point to the correct executables in your MikTeX installation.
5. Test with a Simple Document
Create a very simple LaTeX document and try to render it in Scribus. This can help determine if the problem is with your specific document or with Scribus and LaTeX integration in general.

6. Update Scribus and MikTeX
Ensure that both Scribus and MikTeX are updated to the latest versions. Sometimes, bugs are fixed in newer versions that might resolve your issue.

7. Temporary File Handling
Verify if the temporary PDF files generated by LaTeX are being created and accessed properly. Sometimes, Scribus might be having trouble accessing these files if they are being locked or not properly closed by LaTeX.

8. Alternative Tools
As a temporary workaround, if the problem persists and you need to meet a deadline, consider using another LaTeX tool or convert your formulas to images manually and import them into Scribus. This isn't ideal but can help you continue working while troubleshooting the main issue.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your comments. To clarify, yes the "cost" would be for my development time to work on the features and make them available in the project. I'm an experienced Qt developer.

Thank you. I'll jump on IRC when starting any actual development but will put proposals for discussion in the forum first.

As you've identified, quite a portion of the wiki needs updating but we can provide direct responses to questions.
Note 1.6.x is our stable branch. 1.7.x is our development series where most development occurs - significant changes to the UI, table of contents and index generation are there.
Thanks for the links, we'll check them out. I have 1.7 from svn compiling and running. I used to use svn ages ago and it's come back to me surprisingly quickly! With regards to the development, I would generally hope to update any associated documentation as I go. There were a few old roadmaps I found on the Wiki and some of the ideas aren't too far off what we want to achieve. Hopefully some good proposals can cover our use case and easily fit with other use cases too for maximum value to the work.

Scribus seems like a great community to be involved in too, thanks for everyone's pointers  :)

Beginner Talk / my own templates don't show up...
Last post by inkfountain - Today at 03:38:26 AM
I saved a couple of documents as templates, but they do not show up on the chooser when I try to create  a new document from a template. I can find them in the folder where I stored them on my computer. How can I make them show up in the template chooser? Where am I going wrong?

Quote from: BN_Dev on September 08, 2024, 07:28:12 AMMy hope is if the features are possible and the patches are accepted, and the cost to sponsor the development is comparable to the cost of QXP/CS/QPP NG, then it would be a no-brainer for us to switch production to being fully open-source.  I'm encouraged one of the roadmap wiki pages has some things on similar to what we need so hopefully the discussions will be fruitful.

Scribus is used in some newspapers and magazines, with some good examples from India in particular. Some examples come up on this Facebook page at times: https://www.facebook.com/groups/scribus/
