General Discussion / Re: New Scribus Manual

hallo tim_occ,

if i understand you correctly, your plan is to move into this repository (and update) the (rather old) official scribus manual.

sadly, there is a major problem with that scribus documentation: it is not free in the sense of free software.
the most important consequence is that it won't included in the linux distributions (it's sometimes in the non-free repositories, but does not get automatically installed).

personally, i have a second issue with the official manual: it contains too much content that is not strictly speaking about scribus (but more an introduction to DTP) and this makes it harder to keep it up to date and translate.

in my eyes, if we want to have a modern manual for scribus, i would suggest to start from "initiation à scribus".
(sorry, i can't find it right now online, but i have a local copy on my computer...)

it's a fine, small, introduction to scribus that is released under the GPL license (not ideal either, but better than the custom license of the official documentation).
if you change your mind, i have parts of the book already translated into english and converted to markdown.
Scripts and Plugins / copyObjects() from master page...
Last post by scriberus - June 30, 2024, 03:07:30 PM
I am using copyObjects from a master page, then closeMasterPage(), then pasteObjects() on the current active page.  However, the paste seems to attempt to put the object back on the master page as the currentPage() function returns the page number of the master page - even though it was closed.

I confirmed this by checking currentPage() after closeMasterPage()
which was correctly set back to the page before editMasterPage(x) and then immediately after pasteObjects() the page number changes back to what the page number was when in editMasterPage().

Am I missing something to set before the Paste?

This does work as expected directly in the UI... I can copy any object from a master page and then manually paste it in any normal page.  This is what I want to script.
General Discussion / New Scribus Manual

Hi all,

A few days ago, I started a small side project to port the Scribus manual to a Sphinx based documentation using reStructuredText language.
I pushed the ported manual to my personal GitHub account, see here: (would be cool if we can move it to the official Scribus repo)

In addition, I set up a "read the docs" account to automatically publish the documentation, see the result here.

Each change on GitHub will trigger an auto update of the Read The Docs version.

Currently, localisation is not supported yet, but I'm working on it.

What are the benefits of having the documentation in Sphinx format?
1. The documentation source can compile in different output formats, like html, pdf or epub
2. Sphinx has a compiler log to show unused files, missing files or broken formatting
3. Documentation localisation will work in the same way as the main Scribus localisation (po files) and could be translated via Transifex too.
4. Read the Docs support documentation versioning based on GitHub branches.

Thanks folks! It wasn't super-self-explanatory once I got to the Sections menu, but I got it solved with a minimum of fussing.

Thanks again!
User Interface / Re: Improve the nodes editing

Ok holding CTRL down while manipulating the corner nodes will give you some of what I am asking for. Still need to follow the constraint settings unless I am missing that.

the feature must stay. but there should be a better way to switch between the two modes (much faster back and forth and both lines should be visible at the same time).
not sure if both should be editable at the same time (most of all, because, at the start, both values are at the same place)

resetting the contour line is also a necessary feature.

Also needs the options to  add constraint to moving points to align vertically or horizontally, and added nodes that will extend a side (left, right,  top, bottom) like there is for the text box.

Started Scribus, then dropped a .sla file. It opened just as expected. Started another project, then dropped a sla file. It simply added the xml content to the text frame present.
Apropos, sla is not a graphical file. It is a XML, a text of sorts, so I think Scribus treats it just the way it should treat the text...
I'd install 1.6.2 on another machine and give it another test...
All the best!, S.
Layout Issues / Re: gap around frame

Isn't this what you use the contour line for?

But maybe that is not available for all types of objects?

A trick i've use is to give the image frame a stroke color and set a width of the stroke, then make the stroke transparent, it has a limitation. The stroke grows outward and inward  from the border of the frame. This will impact the image some and may make the image unusable for your document.

And yes you can also edit the contour line(s) ad well. Was just checking if it worked on shapes as well, and it does.
Just checked with a text frame converted to outlines and it works with that as well.

Works well with squares/rectangles. Tried with a circle shape, getting the contour line to be evenly spaced around the circle requires a bit of fiddling to get it to look right. Squares/Rectangles with rounded corners all use a contour line with squared corners. You cannot edit the contour at the corners to match.
