Hello!
I have installed Scribus 1.6.1 on Windows 11, but I cannot find a way to activate dark mode in Scribus. The various themes don't result in dark mode. Also setting the global theme setting in Windows to dark doesn't help.
Thanks!
Did you have scribus running when making the change? if have you restarted scribus after the change? not familiar with windows version of dark mode activation but the restart of scribus might be needed.
Yes, I restarted Scribus every time when making changes in the Windows 11 theme settings and the Scribus internal preferences. I always restarted into a light theme.
I also tried now with Scribus 1.6.2.svn and I get the same behavior.
make sure scribus isnt running, navigate to the config file, and rename it.
Start scribus and see if this clears up the issue.
1. Made sure Scribus was not running.
2. Switched Windows 11 to dark mode
3. Deleted the entire C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Scribus folder (assuming the config files are stored there)
4. Opened Scribus, C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Scribus is recreated
However, still no dark user interface in Scribus. Is there something that can be triggered through command line maybe?

not sure what to try now, Having used win11 ever. Hopefully a 1in11 user can chime in and help out.
Other than making sure that you have a dark theme selected in scribus. I'm not sure where else to look.
I hope there wasn't anything important in your config file!
Thanks for all your input so far and no worries about the config files, I am still starting out with Scribus and experimenting.
When you say "making sure that you have a dark theme selected in scribus" , which themes are you referring to?
In the Scribus preferences I have the following choices under the Theme drop down list (see attached picture):
1. blank field
2. windowsvista
3. Windows
4. Fusion
None of these refer to anything being dark. Do I need to get additional themes somewhere?
Those exactly. Have you tried switching to any of them?

Tried all of them, with restarts in between, and in all kinds of combinations of Windows 11 theme settings set to light and/or dark.
Does this look different in Linux or OS X, with specific mention of a dark theme?
Make sure you select the dark mode icon set too.

I now tried all the following permutations with a restart in between each of them and all resulted in Scribus being displayed in a light theme:

let's try to sum it up:
- i have a light mode "vanilla" linux (no desktop environment), and i could not get scribus to use a dark mode.
- we have several people complaining that on their dark mode MacOs they don't see the icons (and the reply is: pick the dark icons). so i have to assume that it just works for them.
- we have lot of people complaining that on windows they don't manage to get scribus to use the dark mode.
my question: are there people around that are actually using scribus 1.6 with dark mode on windows or linux?
can they tell the community, if they had to do anything special to get scribus to match the (dark) system theme?
(btw, as far as i understood, the development branch 1.7.0 should automatically detect the dark theme... but that's for the "distant" future...)
Here a summary of the (still partial) result of the survey:
- It works correctly on Linux with KDE and the Kvantum theme installed.
I'll update this list with the feedback of the users.
Works for me. But mind you i am also running kvantum as well, YMMV.
But you have a theme called HighContrastInverse, which the screenshot in this post
https://forums.scribus.net/index.php/topic,5067.msg23219.html#msg23219
shows is not available for kn0.
I've finally tried it out on Windows 10 and could get Scribus to start with the dark mode by:
- Windwows key / command, type "dark" and choose "turn on dark mode for apps"
- Change the option "Choose your color" to "dark"
- Start scribus with "Scribus.exe -platform windows:darkmode=2"
Just picking the dark theme for Windows or using the darkmode command line option do not seem to be enough.
Anybody can find a better solution?
p.s.: here is some documentation from qt...
p.p.s.: and here some more explanations: https://forum.qt.io/post/618726
I can confirm this to work. Once Scribus is started with "Scribus.exe -platform windows:darkmode=2", one can also switch from light to dark and vice versa in Windows Settings and Scribus adjusts automatically without restart (Icons still must be adjusted manually in the Scribus preferences). So the easiest fix would be for now to always start Scribus with that command?
However, unfortunately, this dark mode is not the most appealing. Attached you can find screenshots with the various Themes I can pick. blank and windowsvista (I think they may be the same) have (terrible) white borders all over the place. Fusion has amongst others errors when displaying inactive menu elements. Also, all of them seem to pick black instead of Windows' darker gray for dark coloring.
The screenshot
@AdmFubar posted of dark mode in Linux looks much more polished.
Thought you might like the look of the kvantum-dark
Recently upgraded to openSUSE 15.6, and started a fresh kde settings, have many years of kruft built up in my settings.
Now with a clean set of settings in kde, kvantum works nicely. Thought i'd share another shot of scribus using another kvantum theme.
