There should be a certain amount of skepticism, and the author of the article also sells fonts. It is a slight front to help push his product.

Nice and interesting.
I'm the only one admiring the rats placement around the page numbering as they helped to spread the disease?

Agree with Nermander.
The first four rules are worth to consider, the fifth is arguable and could be expanded to several articles. Wholeheartedly agree with statement that a good looking font does not ensure it is easily legible.

I guess there is a common rule omitted that is valid for most of books/articles. The goal of text is to tell a piece of information. Its look should support it or at least should not disturb. Including pictures, colors, headlines.

I am not sure I agree with the last item, there are a few good freely available fonts out there.

I really think the font choice could be expanded a lot, because there is a huge difference between how a font looks and how easy it is to read.

I once found someone who had typeset the same text with probably a dozen different fonts (all were high quality fonts) to make it easier to see the difference.

But those 5 rules are not bad, I think 90% of texts I read do not follow any of those 5! :)

Line length I think is the biggest issue, it is very difficult to read a text in 10 pt Times New Roman in 18 cm long lines (A4 with 1,5 cm margins).

There is another possibility, it could be a bad font. Have you tried using a different one?

hi sheba

it looks as some direct formatting overrides the style settings. but without a sample document it's just guessing in the dark... (you could reduce the document to the paragraphs shown in your screenshot of the story editor and upload this minimal .sla file.)
did you ever check the control characters as recommended by admfubar?

It has been awhile and I am finally getting back to trying to learn Scribus and am still having the issue posted about here. I am attaching three screenshots--one of the first page showing a bit of space (but not a full space) between paragraphs - which is what I want. Another shows subsequent paragraphs with no extra space and the last which shows the "story editor" indicating the same "default paragraph." I'm perplexed. I hope they come through good. I did go to the properties pallet and was able to find/fix "padding" issue, but did not find spacing between paragraphs listed. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Big plus for me is that Scribus save format is xml, meaning it is open for hacking, while Affinitys is not.
Even Indesign allows you to export and import tagged text - Affinity does not.

I guess the issue is Scribus allows you do decide everything, there are essentially no "ready to use" suggestions, which means it is a steep step for those who just quickly wants to throw something together.

But for those who plan their project ahead, develop a colorset, set up design rules, font choices etc Scribus works a lot better.

I have actually done "mockups" in Word, and then "recreated" those in Scribus for the final polishing and use, becuase yes, Scribus is not really good for "trying what works" design.
