From the main menu select the entry Windows. In the drop down menu look for the Outline entry. and select that one.
In the panel that opens (resize as needed) and scroll through the list to find the  group you need to edit.  Click the + to expand and show the  objects in the group, then click the text entry. The selected entry should show as selected in the group. You can now double click to edit the text, you should see the text cursor where in the text that you clicked.

Showcase / Children book in multiple lang...

Today I was watching

https://media.ccc.de/v/38c3-let-s-spark-children-s-interest-in-coding

and, at the end of the talk, I got "forwarded" to

Ada & Zangemann - A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream

ada-zangemann.png

A book about kids and programming.

While looking for the book, I've discovered that it's done with Scribus, produced in multiple languages.

The result is pretty and worth to have a look:

https://archive.org/details/ada-zangemann/

I've not yet read it, but I stumbled on their git repository

https://git.fsfe.org/FSFE/ada-zangemann

and it contains all the resources to create the book:

  • the Scribus templates
  • the images
  • the scripts to fill the Scribus files and produce the PDFs for print and for viewing.

In my eyes, this is a good starting point for people who want to use Scribus to create a book that is translated in multiple languages and automatically fill the content out of text files.

While looking at the files, I've noticed a few things:

  • They are not using the Scribus drop caps, but are inserting them from images (they did not find the drop caps or Scribus is not implementing them in a fitting way?).
  • They are not using the Python scripting inside of Scribus (except for simple code for producing the PDF from the finished .sla), but longer Perl and Shell scripts.
  • They are putting the text into the .sla by modifying the raw .sla XML in a Perl script, rather than loading the text
  • They are not using the page numbers (and they are not using master pages).
  • No text formatting (the script removes the formatting) and the text is kept left aligned (a choice that makes handling multiple translations much easier and with all the fancy graphics it's probably a good choice).
  • For some reason, they are creating one template per language, instead of filling the same .sla (template) with each language.

All in all: they made good choices and they managed to create a workflow that is simple to follow and adapt.

But, I have to admit that, now, I'm tempted to write a Python script that runs inside of Scribus, make it more general to be used also for other books and fill tickets for all the feature that are missing (as an example for the drop caps, if they cannot do what is needed for this book!)

personally, most of the time i avoid getting text to float around images.
having images of the same width of the column or a multiple of columns mostly give a better result.

if you're interested on doing this with scribus, please upload a .sla with some fake texts and frames (no need to upload the images in them...) and i can check if what i'm suggesting might fit to your document.

this having been said...

  • you can select single items in a group by using the alt key (or with the outline palette...)
  • when the text item is selected, you can use the "e" key to enter the edit mode and type your new text
  • when the image frame is selected, use ctrl-i (or the file menu) to load a new image (or the "e" key to scale the image and/or moving it around inside of the frame)
  • currently, if you modify the size of the frame, the flow will not get updated (see https://bugs.scribus.net/view.php?id=17355)

if the crash also occurs when you load the file without images, i fear that the .sla file is corrupted.

would you mind uploading it here or in the bug tracker (https://bugs.scribus.net)?
(only the sla, not the images)
in the bug tracker, you have the option to mark the upload as "private", then it's not world readable and only the developers will have access to it.

on top of it, sadly, the fact you bought a new computer, does not automatically mean that you will have access to more memory.
newer operating systems tend to eat up more memory and computer manufacturer often preload the computer with more and more crap software that keep your computer busy and well fed.
that could also be a reason for the lack of RAM.

on the other side, i'm not sure that adding virtual memory will be of a big help (in the contrary,  scribus might not play well with it...)

What Nermander suggested looks like it should work. I would take that first layout and make it onto a Master Page. then apply it to the rest of the needed pages. Most likely you would have to manually link frames across the documents as needed.

Beginner Talk / Editing grouped objects and co...

Hello. Sorry for my Google / Selfmade-English.
I have the following problems/questions with the subsequent editing of grouped objects in Scribus 1.6.1 under Linux:

I often have to fill pages where a photo including a caption underneath has to be inserted into / on the text.
Then the image section and the length of the caption have to be changed.

It seems that this only works if I ungroup the object. When I have finished editing and want to group it again, the contour line is lost.
How can I solve this better?

Specifically:

1. For my library, I make a picture frame and caption including contour lines. Then I group it and add it to my library. (pic01.jpg)

2. I write a text and drag the grouped photo and description from my library onto my text. The contour of the grouped object is retained. (pic02.jpg).

3. Now I want to edit the grouped object, e.g.
a) change the top frame of the image so that the image frame (in height) becomes smaller or larger vertically
b) change the caption and lengthen or shorten the text frame.

Of course, the contour lines of the two grouped objects (image and text frame) should be retained.

How do you do that?

I currently have to ungroup and then edit the elements. As can be seen on pic03.jpg, the contour line remains.
But if I then regroup, the contour is removed and I have to adjust it manually again.
see pic04.jpg and 5

Is there a better way, perhaps without ungrouping the entire group?

Possibly with the "Link Objects" or "Adjust Group" commands?

THANKS

From what I can see, the upper and lower parts have different sizes depending on page? The I really don't think Scribus is the best tool, because you will have to adjust the frames manually on each page.

As for how doing the layout, I would probably try to make the upper part a 2-column text frame, with a large gap between the columns. Then on top of this gap I would place a separate text frame for the cross references.

But, I don't think there is any way to automatically adjust the height of each part, that would have to be manually adjusted page by page.

Free discussion / Bible layout
Last post by CarlosEnrique84 - December 29, 2024, 03:51:04 AM
Hi everyone,

I have a project to create a layout similar to the one in the attached image where the biblical text appears in the upper section of the page divided into two columns and these two columns are separated by a third thin column for cross references. The bottom section of the page should have two columns and is intended for placing comments on the main text. The idea is that the upper biblical text has continuity from one column to another and then to the next page. And in the same way the lower text has continuity from one column to another and then to the next page. Can someone help me?

Thank you very much.

Carlos

Many years ago on the Amiga, there was a photo image/effects editor call ImageFX. The entire set of commands where available for scripting, with the GUI built out of scripts for the standard set of image manipulations as shipped. There macro recorder would build a Arexx script  that you could add to later if needed.

If something similar was done 35-40 years ago, it certainly can be done today.
