PDF Generation / Re: Accessible PDFs
Last post by OSDP - June 01, 2025, 12:16:54 PM
In this link, we can read :

"Image-only PDFs. If the PDF is a scanned document, each page is treated like one big picture. Running OCR (Optical Character Recognition) converts scanned text to searchable/taggable/readable text, which makes the document accessible."

So an alternative would be to provide each page as an image? (.png .webp .jpg)?

Quote from: a.l.e on February 23, 2025, 08:27:19 PMBut at the end, it boils down do the fact that RIPs (the thing that converts PDFs into bitmaps that can be printed) and the printers (the thing that gets the bitmaps and put ink on paper) are really complex and fragile machines.

What happens if the text in the .pdf is converted to curves/outlines ?
What happens if the .pdf is prepared so that each page is converted to a bitmap image ? (.tiff or .jpg)

Four brave Scribus people met in Nürnberg, had fun, good food, enjoyed several LGM talks, and... had long discussions!

The most concrete output is a set of "Metabugs" in the Scribus issue tracker: they should help us tracking what is needed (or desirable) for the release of next Stable release and what is left to do:

https://bugs.scribus.net/view.php?id=17538

Of course it's not a final list, but the current main topics are:

- fonts management (some "minor" tweaks on how active fonts can be selected and how they are displayed in the drop down)
- Inital support for RTL documents (we already support RTL text, but we would like to gradually make it possible to create RTL documents, starting by being able to set RTL as the default mode in the text frames!)
- A few improvements to the Scripter (the main one being a tentative to make the scripter console dockable)
- Improvements to the .sla file format for Scribus 1.8 (giving better names to the attributes)
- UI fixes (mainly, finishing the transition to the new palettes and the final polish to the node editor)
- Various features and bug fixes (a bin for more random tasks, that we would like to see in)  (and tasks we are anyways working on).

Everybody is welcome to help Scribus reach those goals!
(And if you think we have missed something, please raise your hands!)

And, no, this does not mean that a release of Scribus will happen soon. But having such a list might help having the release a bit sooner...

We did also let our mind wander a bit more freely and forged possible goals for the release after the next one... But this is a topic for a future post...

Here is a link to the nice explanation of TextOnThePath.

I also enclose a supersimple .sla file demonstrating that. Best regards, S.

Layout Issues / Creating a Hebrew Book Layout...
Last post by david613 - May 30, 2025, 06:02:01 AM
Hello,

Thank you for developing Scribus — it's a powerful tool and I'm excited to use it for my next project.

I would like to use Scribus to create a book in Hebrew, following the traditional right-to-left layout (like in printed Hebrew books). That means:

The first page should appear on the left when the book is opened.

The second page should be on the right, and so on.

Page numbering and layout should reflect this right-to-left flow.

Text is in Hebrew on the right-hand pages, and translation on the left.

However, I haven't found a setting to define the book as right-to-left bound, as is standard for Hebrew (or Arabic) publications. Is there a built-in way to define the document's binding direction or page flow to match Hebrew books?

If this option exists, I'd be grateful for guidance on how to activate and use it.

If not, I'd also be happy to hear any suggested workarounds from experienced users.

Thanks again for your time and support!
David

Beginner Talk / Trying to Create a Diploma for...
Last post by ehbowen - May 30, 2025, 05:57:33 AM
All right. My sister's eight kids have all been home-schooled. It's legitimate schooling; they're part of a co-op where they learn Latin, rhetoric, history from ancient through modern, and so on. The oldest ones have graduated college by now.

Number seven, my next-to-youngest niece, has gone as far with home schooling as she can. My sister and BIL want to present her with a Diploma. I've used Scribus before to publish novels, but this is the first time I've tried to use it for anything decorative.

I first tried purchasing an Etsy template on line (trying to attach), but AFTER purchasing it I found out that it required a Canva account to be usable. I don't have, or want, a Canva account. I first tried a similar design in Affinity Designer, but try as I might I couldn't create a symmetrical arc for a text path. I could create half an arc, and mirror it, and join the two arcs together...but whenever I tried to use it as a text path the text would go halfway, then flip over and follow that half of the arc upside down. Sigh.

Anyhow, whether Scribus or Affinity, I've GOT to get this put together by tomorrow evening. (Did I mention I have to work a full day boiling water tomorrow, too?) Asking any kind souls here for help with proper formatting and making it look pretty. I'll put in names, text, Bible verse and such...I just need layout help. Thanks.

Scribus does not merge pages, however the PDF export dialog will allow you to reorganise the pages on export to support imposed page numbering, eg 1,28,2,27..
