Free discussion / WTF is the "Never should be sh...
Last post by e - April 27, 2024, 04:56:41 PM
Hello.

I first used Scribus in 2022 and had a seamless experience, but now I have very limited control over fonts.

Scribus recognizes every font on my system (Linux Mint 21), but it puts many of them on a list at the very right-hand side of the font preferences dialog, entitled "Never should be shown" and they don't show up in the regular font list.

There are no pages in the help files nor on the fora containing the string "Never should be shown". Google searches for "Scribus intext:never should be shown" return 0 results.

?

Scribus randomly decides to avoid fonts, AND it's a secret?

1. Why are some fonts restricted?

2. Why is there no access to the list of banned fonts?

3. Why has nobody mentioned this?

4. Am I the stupidest person in the world and is this just a pebkac error?

Please tell me how to control which fonts Scribus uses.

Thanks in advance,

e.

The PR was accepted and ScribusGeneratorMac has been merged into the main project and released as v4.0.  Read the Documentation.

Oh - is it not possible to edit my first post?

I'd like to add that I've since figured out how to dock the properties windows. I just had to drag them to the right and drop them in the sidebar that opens automatically.

That's already solved and encouraging to continue!

btw: is it always to have to do the captcha procedure, or only for me as a beginner?

Hi, I recently made a flyer with LibreOffice and became curious about how it might work with Scribus. I installed Scribus 1.5.8 in Linux LMDE 6 Cinnamon. I also bought the book "Scribus 1.5 compact" as PDF and did the first exercise - cover of the book - with it.

That actually went quite well, but some mistakes irritated me. I was supposed to set the margins and bleeds to 0. But the screenshot in the book didn't show the red line all the way to the outside like in my sheet. Then a few dimensions were incorrect (5mm too little), so there were shifts. Well, at least it had a learning effect.
Finally I should click on F2 in the text field, as before for the placement of the spine. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything in these properties to format the text. At some point I realized that I have to use F3 for a text field. The tutorial probably still refers to an earlier version, although I have 1.5(.8) - as in the book title.

I find it "suboptimal" that the properties windows lie loosely above the main window. I was already put off by this in Gimp before there was finally an option for a single window where the palettes are permanently docked.

Is there an option for Scribus - perhaps through a plugin - to permanently dock the loose windows?

Preliminary conclusion: I will first work my way in step by step and then see whether it actually offers advantages over LibreOffice for certain purposes. Because I'm open to new things.

yea, the indents imho are a bit clunky
I have better luck typing the values in vs using the sliders
and finally realizing they are relative to each other and not absolute

This solution doesn't seem to work on Scribus 1.5.8 on my Debian system. I don't know if this is a regression but the "Auto-Indent" checkbox currently does nothing. I've also been playing around with the tabs and can't get them to do what I want either.

The distance from text control works but I can't get the tabs to only indent the second (& subsequent) line(s). From my standpoint, it looks like the entire tabulator system is having problems doing what it says it is supposed to do.  :(

I was eventually able to get a list that looked OK by turning off the list and tab features (other than the bulleted list itself, with the bullet character. Then I inserted line breaks where necessary in the text, a space after the bullet character and 3 spaces after the line breaks. This is not ideal but it works until the developers get the lists and tabs features working again.

Code / page's initial width and width
Last post by a.l.e - April 25, 2024, 09:02:17 AM
in ScPage there are both an initialWidth and a width.

there are initial values for the the width, the height and the margins, but nowhere an explanation of their meaning.

when resizing a page, scribus seems to use twice the same value...

can somebody explain to me what is the difference and then add some documentation to the code?

Just use sed, although this has limitations on just replacing all fill colours in the entire SLA file.. but, you may have used something different.. but anyway

First backup your sla file.
For the one you want to edit, assuming you want to replace all entries with overprint, a command like:
sed -i 's/\ PCOLOR=\"Black\"\ /\ PCOLOR=\"Black\"\ doOverprint=\"1\"/g' filename.sla
might work. I hope I got all the backslashes correct.

That's what I figured I needed to do. I was just hoping for a simpler solution. Will post a script later if there is interest.
