Installation and Setup / Re: Crash when opening specific file
« Last post by Turdus Merula on January 31, 2023, 09:31:12 am »
Hello,

Not that old. The file I have problems with is about 130 pages. The older version is 90 pages long. Everything was done on the 1.5.8 version of Scribus.

Furthermore, I've tried something new about this:

- Open the native Ubuntu version of Scribus
- Open my file
> it crashes.

- Open the Wine version of Scribus
- Open the native Ubuntu version of Scribus
- Open my file with the latter
> It works.

My guess is that there is a memory management problem somewhere.

x              (x)                    you mention "older version of the file", how old of a version? what version of scribus did you use to create it originally?

Today the problem shows again.

I start my pc, I do some things on the Internet, and then try to open my file. Scribus crashes. I open my file with the portable version, I close it. I open the file with the native version of Scribus, it doesn't crash. My guess is that it's a memory allocation problem.

In 1.5.8 layers should work across master pages. Are you really using layers, and not refering to the "level" of the objects?

I just did a quick test here, the text frame is on the Master page and the image on the normal page. They are on separate layers.

Follow-up to this problem: I found a workaround.

I was using Scribus 1.5.8 on Ubuntu. I downloaded a portable Windows version and could open the file, save my file under a new name, and open it back with the native Ubuntu version.

i wonder if the script is 100% correct.

how do you get it?

here is a way that should give you an exact copy of what is on github:

Scribus is 1.5.8.
Page number is highest layer and image is lowest layer, but the page number is on Master Page and image is on "normal" page. The result is that the image covers the number.

hi kaspar
  • if you work with scribus 1.5.x, patjr told you the solution. (place the page number on a higher layer than the image…)
  • in scribus 1.4.x you should put a text frame with the page number on top of the image and send it to the scrapbook. a double click on the scrapbook item will insert it with the original coordinates on the current page. (or you switch to scribus 1.5.8…)
