Last post by MrB - August 01, 2026, 09:54:40 PMScribus will open your fonts, but maybe it doesn't know where you installed them - it scans a few default places. You can add extra font paths in preferences.
If you can provide a sample IDML file we can work to improve the import.

Last post by ScribasTester - August 01, 2026, 04:19:53 PMBased on a recommendation, I tried Scribus in the latest available Windows version (v1.7.3).
The very first thing I wanted to test was whether Scribus could become a replacement for InDesign.
So I tried to open an existing *.indd file.
The answer: it can't.
Fine, so I exported the document from InDesign as an *.idml file instead.
Scribus does import this ZIP-based format, but the result was disappointing. At first glance it was obvious that the fonts were not imported correctly, the font sizes were wrong, and none of the images were visible.
After spending several hours trying to figure out what was going on, I finally found the font mapping table—only to discover that not all of my installed Windows fonts were even recognized.
Sorry to say this, but at the current stage of development I would expect at least the installed fonts and font sizes to be imported correctly. Without that, it's very difficult to seriously evaluate Scribus as a possible successor to InDesign.
I'm not posting this because I'm looking for workarounds or complicated conversion workflows. I'm posting it to save other people from spending hours on the same ultimately pointless tests. Anyone searching for an affordable alternative to Adobe's increasingly expensive InDesign will probably start by asking one simple question: "Can I continue working with my existing documents?"

So, even though a template has the same extension (.sla), just dragging a file of that extension name into the right folder isn't enough? I see it created a few other necessary files by doing 'save as template'?

I started creating a template (that I need to edit more).
I see the Scribus installer created two template directories,
...users\...\Documents\Scribus, and
C:\Program Files\Scribus 1.6.5\Templates-mine.
But copying my template into either of those directories did not cause it to show up in the list of available templates. How do I get Scribus to see my created templates when I goto "New from Template"?

Text Properties - "Orphans and Widows" is translated to "Schusterjungen/Hurenkinder". Translated to englisch this would mean "Sons of a shoemaker/Kids of a whore"
Please set it to "Waisen und Witwen" or even better to declare the meaning of this setting "Absatz Bedingungen"

I'm a graphic designer and some years ago I transitioned from Indesign to Scribus (and I never regretted it). Scribus is a robust program and it's super cool to use once you get the hang of it.
After I went through my own journey of adapting and learning how to use it, I decided to put together a course that teaches how to create books from start to finish using Scribus.
The course was in the making for around a year and a half, and now it's finally live.
I'm very proud of the results! I tried to keep it comprehensive but practical at the same time, so students can learn while they create a project. You can check it out on the link:
