Title: Crop marks on inside of pages in pdf.
Post by: nick00 on October 02, 2014, 12:46:46 am
Hello all,

I wonder if somebody could help me.

I donate my spare time to a local charity that has an annual Charity Ball. This means that they need a brochure (A5 single fold booklet) to go with it and I usually cobble something together in Publisher (which, as most of you will know, is not ideal).

I have heard of Scribus as I use Gimp and Inkscape quite a bit, but I have never checked it out, until now. I must say that it's very good, and I look forward to getting familiar with it and using it with skill!

But for now, i have a problem, and that is that when I export to pdf, it adds crop marks to the insides of each page - that is, to the right of the left page and the left of the right. You can see on the image below. Also, I have added a couple of screen shots featuring document set-up and export options.

If you could help me out then I would be very grateful as the deadline is beginning to loom!

Thank you,
Nick.

hi nick

do you really need crop marks? – ask your printer! (if he needs this marks, he'll know how to deal with them. but most printers don't use them any more…)
you can't tell scribus to set crop marks for spesific edges.

There are options in the Export to PDF in the File menu. Look for the Pre-Press tab.
You can find the check boxes there to control the crop marks, along with other options.
:) hope this helps.

If I understand you right, you do not want bleed or crop mark on the "inside" margings, only top, bottom and outside?

Unfortunately Scribus currently has no support for choosing which crop marks to add, you will have to use some other program to crop the inside margins. But it the PDF is going to be printed by a commercial printer and impositioning software will take care of this, the crop marks are outside the trim box.

Hello guys and thank you for your replies. Hey, that rhymes ;).

OK, let me respond to you one at a time:

utnik: Thanks, I will send them a message and find out. That said, I would like to have them working if possible - just because maybe a different printer might need it.

AdamFubar: Thanks for trying to help but as utnik says, I already tried that.

Nermander: Thank you, I take what you say on board. Good to get your advice.

So, thank you all. One odd thing is that this very issue seems to have been raised as a bug ages ago and subsequently resolved (if I'm reading the bug tracker right). You can see that here (http://bugs.scribus.net/view.php?id=9385).

I'd appreciate any comments.

Thanks,
Nick.

hi nick

the linked bug was about bleed settings, not about crop marks!
you can define different bleeds for the top, bottom, left and right edges (or inside and outside, if you use a double sided layout…) – for crop marks this isn't possible so far.

Hello utnik,

Thank you for your reply - it's just that it started off as: In a 2 page spread of an image, crop and bleed marks are shown on the inside of the pages...

Just revisiting the pdf and the real problem (still related to crop marks I think) is that the marks seem to separate the content of the heading when spread across two pages, like the attached image. You can see that the 'Y' has been split by the same distance as the crop marks.

When I get home, I will do away with crop marks altogether and see if the title cuddles back up again ;)

thank you,
Nick.

you're right, the bug report covers the bleed area and the marks.
the fixed part is that with the page content outside the bleed area. the crop marks are still there – that's why tik753159 asked for reopening the bug…

as nermander wrote, the crop marks are outside of the trim box. in a professional printing process the two parts of the 'Y' should connect seamless…

this should work.

Ah, yes - I see. Obviously I was not concentrating enough to read it thoroughly ;)

Well, it doesn't seem to be working, the letter 'Y' is still split in two :(

Thank you for bearing with me and helping me with this - I really do appreciate it.

The fog of early morning had me miss the problem  :O
I think the trouble with your document my be that that you have no inside margins.there is no place for them to be outside of. Took the parameters from your first image in your post and created your document. It seems odd to not have inside margins when making a booklet type document

Hi AdmFubar,

Thank you for your reply but the first image shows bleeds and not margins.

All the best,
Nick.

OK, just to update.

I have tried everything - the printers have got back to me to say that they do need the crop marks. Really don't want to (and don't have the time) to redo all of the work in Publisher.

I even installed Ubuntu to see if it would perform on Linux, but no luck :(

If anybody has any ideas then that would be good.

Thanks,
Nick.

hi nick

did you ask the printer if he can deal with your file?
in a print workflow with .pdf trim boxes this free space between facing pages shouldn't be a problem.

the next option might be to consider to go to another printer…

Oops, you know I completely forgot to ask so I have just done so!

Thanks,

OK, sorry for neglecting this but I have been busy getting the brochure ready. I should just update everybody.

The printers were able to deal with the gaps in the centre spread titles caused by the crop marks.

So I am happy, and I'd like to thank everyone that has contributed to the thread. I'd also like to thank the Scribus Devs - what an awesome package - I did an editable pdf with it yesterday and everybody at work was impressed.

Thank you all.
Nick.
