Beginner Talk / Re: Lots and lots of footnotes...

Is there any specific reason that exporting to PDF directly from Word is not an option?

As far as I know all newer versions of Word can export to PDF.

Beginner Talk / Lots and lots of footnotes...
« Last post by ContesEtNouvelles on October 01, 2021, 05:38:54 pm »
Hi,

I'm working on a book with 17 chapters, each of about 15-20 pages, with about 10 footnotes on each page. That's getting on for 3,000 footnotes...

For me, the idea of using Scribus is so that I can have paper books produced by a commercial digital printer (... and at some point I'd like to end up with an e-book too, with the footnotes hyperlinked as in a Word document, but that's for later...)

The master document is in .docx but I also have good versions in .doc and in Libre Office .odt

I've tried importing the .doc and .odt versions using File > Import > Get text > Importer > Automatic / Word Document / OpenDocument Text Documents / OpenOffice.org Writer documents.

Importing a chapter from .doc gives me all the text, including the footnotes and the footnote numbers in the text. However, all the footnotes are piled up at the end of the chapter, and none of the formatting is imported.

Importing a chapter from .odt gives me the formatting, although it's a bit chewed up (additional lines inserted between each para, etc) but it doesn't give me any of the footnotes, or the footnote numbers in the text.

Is there any way to do this in Scribus, apart from spending a couple of weeks re-doing all the footnotes by hand?
Or maybe there's a better way to get the Word document into a format that a printer will accept?

Scripts and Plugins / Start scripting with Python
« Last post by LeonardoM on October 01, 2021, 02:46:59 pm »
Goodmorning,
I would like to start writing some scripts using python.
Does Anyone know a guide to SCRIBUS commands to be automated by python?
I found the following guide:
https://impagina.org/scribus-scripter-api/dialog/
Is there another guide where they explain the functions of the individual commands and also practical examples?

Text and Typography / Import all text frame from external file
« Last post by LeonardoM on September 30, 2021, 04:22:41 pm »
Good morning,
I have a hard time interfacing scribus files with the translator company that uses SDL STUDIO.
When the technicians import our SCRIBUS file their software truncates the paragraphs every time it finds the symbol ().
It seems that the only solution is to export only the text of the entire scribus file.
On the net I found the following script:
https://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Export_all_text
Works well.
Now I would need to be able to import the translated text (made up of many TEXT FRAMES not linked together) into my SCRIBUS file.
I would like to know if there is a script to be able to import the translated text file into the various TEXT FRAMES.

Tutorials, Tips and How-Tos / page shadow option ghosted
« Last post by mcoltezo on September 28, 2021, 11:26:55 pm »
Hi,

I want to turn off the page shadow but in the preferences, that option is checked and ghosted.

Any idea how to get it to respond to my click?

I'm on a MBP with OS Mojave.

Thanks,
Deanna

Scripts and Plugins / Re: Text flowing around images

Creating a second frame can be a good solution.
But generally, with documents with many pictures, I like to set the margins with the text directly with the settings of the image and its contour line. It is not that long to do once you know how to do it, but it would be nice to be able to automate it.
Here is a French/English description of this process (https://nextcloud.silvain-dupertuis.net/index.php/s/X9HLKmf9jxjgZQS) I am using on a regular basis.

hi ysgill

Can we install multiple versions of Scribus on one computer.

yes, i always do.
different versions of scribus 1.5 will share the same settings while 1.4 and 1.5 don't.

How stable is 1.5.6

mostly stable. i use 1.5.8.svn, but have 1.5.7 and 1.5.6.1 as fallback (which i didn't need so far…)
