I believe they are compatible, however always work with a copy of your original file, just in case

General Discussion / Compatibility questions on 1.4...
Last post by gudboi - March 17, 2023, 07:33:25 AM
Hi all, I have two questions on compatibility.
I'm very happy with the 1.4.8 version on a MacBook. But now it's time for me to upgrade from Mojave to Ventura.
I have a lot of projects created on 1.4.x, are these projects totally compatibles on the new 1.5 version?
Can I install on Mojave the 2 version 1.4.8 and 1.5.8 to test the new version and continue working with the old one? Or can I experience conflicts?

Thank you for your replies!

@a.l.e & @utnik: It took me some time to fully understand your response. I'm familiar with the graphs comparing colour spaces, though so far, I mostly thought of them as illustrative of the range of different spaces. I didn't know how to use these graphs to quantify 'how much' a colour is out of gamut. The key was that I wasn't familiar with xyY colour representation :) This helped a lot for me to get an idea of how significant the difference to the printed result might be, thanks! Generally, it seems that none of the colours are 'extreme' sRGBs (probably because the author prints some of their work themselves), so I was happy to leave adjustments to Scribus' colour management function. The files are with the printers now and I'm excited to see the result next week!

@Nermander: Thank you for your reply,  I'm aware of the function of "image effects", I checked the wiki when I applied them to make sure I didn't misuse them. However, they do affect the colours in the eventual output, so I would expect that colour management is applied to the colours that result from "image effects", not to the colours in the original image. Is this not the case? Along these lines, I also would have expected the out-of-gamut marker colour to be unaffected by "image effects" (I'd consider the behaviour I see as a bug).

Best,
jo

i'm not sure if scribus is the optimal tool for your needs. but if you decide that it is, a script to extract the text might be useful.

Thx! Yes, Scribus might indeed not be the best one...

The scrip would be nice, but you would need to reimport it back, so again manual work.

Hi guys,

I am often translating various texts/pdfs/rulebooks etc. and I am using a CAT tool for translation, which can conveniently import for instance Word, TXT, RTF, HTML or XML, by "stripping" the non-text content and only giving me the text for translation.

Is this somehow possible with Scribus? I know *.sla files are essentially XML, but it might not be "pure" XML, or?

Subsequently, is it possible to use external text in Scribus, imported into text frames from separate files? How limited is this functionality (as I imagine any formatting is done in Scribus, so getting text imported means no automated formatting is done)?

Thanks for your reply - It made me rethink and track down "the bug"

The sample I uploaded works fine when i reopen it - also in verdena font - strange

But another scribus file I got continued to have "the error" (I have now uploaded that too Sample 2 Bullet Wrong.sla )

But changing the text to another font made it behave fine - and more important changing it back to "Verdena" it also looks fine. At last I found out that the bullet was in another font than verdena and that caused the misbehavior/trouble
