Is there some way to wrap text around a grouped object?

Tried it, but I could not do it, I could fake it using another object on top which would divert the text in desired shape, I didn't try merging objects...

Works just fine for me in scribus 1.5.6. What version are you using?

for me, it did not follow the Objects contour (which I assumed he wanted), but followed the bounding box fine (1.5.8)

It did for me. Double click the grouped object and in the nodes panel that opens, check the Edit Contour Line, You can add and move nodes for the contour line, this will allow the text to flow around the shape as desired.
