Default styles in F3 and F4 palettes

I'm using v1.5.6.1 on a 64 bit Windows platform

Is there any significance in the F3 Text properties pallet in the two Style drop down options?

I see both Default Character Style  and    Default Paragraph Style with and without enclosing brackets [   ] in the two palette Style dropdowns

Do the [ ] brackets have any significance?

Then also in the F4 Style editor  I see several Default Paragraph Style entries in the list.
Does it matter which dropdown entry I choose to edit the default style?
How did I get so many choices in the first place?
I do frequently import individual pages from other SLAs
but I don't see how that should affect the destination SLA defaults

Or is this odd presentation because I'm using v1.5 ?
