Installation & Missing Fonts

I have a W7 32bit machine.  On 2/8, I installed Scribus 1.4.0 and upon completion of the installation, a readme document opened and said I needed to install Ghostscript before I installed Scribus.

Reading Scribus on-line documentation I came to the conclusion that I could get away with installing Ghostscript without uninstalling Scribus if I made sure the Scribus File > Preferences > External Tools referenced the executable file in Ghostscript.  I installed Ghostscript 9.05.  I then went to the File > Preferences > External Tools and found that the Ghostscript executable gswin32c.exe (together with its correct folder path) was already listed as the executable for the PostScript Interpreter.  I am hoping that is the link that will allow Scribus to run correctly.

Did I do the correct steps to have a successful install of Scribus/Ghostscript?

I have an .sla file that was created on a Windows XP machine using Scribus 1.3.3.x.  I copied the file to my W7 32bit machine and tried to open it with the newly installed Scribus application.  An error message was produced that said there are 2 missing fonts.  The missing fonts are
Harrington Regular
Palace Script MT Italic

Scribus suggested a Times New Roman font substitution to allow the file to open.  My experience is that Times New Roman is not a good substitution and I declined this suggestion.

Is there some universal way to expand my font library to include these missing fonts?

In some Scribus install documentation, I saw this sentence, "When you select the "Extra Fonts" Option in the installer, this will install two sets of high-quality, freely distributable fonts."  I don't recall an "Extra Fonts" option while installing.

Is there some action I need to take to get the "Extra Fonts"?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Install dem? The font files are present in the Fonts folder on your old computer, just make a copy and install them.

An alternative is to put them in a separate font folder and point that folder out in Scribus settings.

As for the extra fonts, I don't remember how it looked, but if I recall correct those are just the ghostscript standard fonts so maybe they were installed together with ghostscript. If you don't miss them you don't need them. And if you miss them, you can just install any fonts you need the usual way in Windows.

Just a tip: When you intend to transfer a project from one machine to another, do not simply copy .sla file, but rather use "File > Collect for Output", then check "Include Fonts" in the dialog which appears afterwards. This way you'll copy all necessary files for producing the same result on both machines.

Thanks so much to everyone who read and especially those who answered my questions.

  • Nermander:  Thanks, that was just the info I needed.  I'm afraid I've been "letting fonts take care of themselves" and they are too important to Scribus to do that. I will study their use and upgrade my fonts as you suggest.
  • Meho R.:  Thanks, the file > "collect for output" with an "include fonts"command  is just what I need.  It should manage my future font problems nicely.
