How to get the table look without tables?

I'm using Scribus 1.4.6 on Linux Mint. I know it has a table tool, but I see from the discussion here that it's not considered good practice to use it. Seems like some people prefer to create tables in another application and import them as images.

Is there a way to alter the background colour, not just for text but right out to the edges of the text box, for alternating lines (or paragraphs) without splitting it up into separate text boxes? Or is that the right way to do it?

If you just want alternating background for the rows, you would maybe make a one-column table and use TABs within the rows.

Then at least it will a bit easier to edit than a full table.
