Automatic page numbering

I'm revisiting this topic, despite the fact that it has been discussed previously, because I have been unable to get it to work.

I have tried different configurations of automatic page numbering commands for 1.4.6: Ctrl-Alt-Shift-P, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+P (which is what Scribus shows when I go into Insert>Character), and I also tried Alt-Ctrl-# from 1.4.2 initially.

None of these seem to work to produce actual page numbers. Only the command itself is displayed.

I seems as if the command keeps on changing, so how is one to keep up with this?

GarryP

With Scribus 1.4.6 on Windows 10 the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+P short-cut works just fine (as does the related menu item "Insert -> Character -> Page Number").
I've checked Scribus 1.4.6 on Ubuntu 17 and both methods work fine there too.
On Macs the key combination is slightly different but I remember the menu item worked on 1.4.6.

Personally I don't use the short-cut as I don't have to insert a page number very often - never more than once per page and usually only once per master page - and just use the menu item instead.

Have you tried resetting your Keyboard Short-cuts via Preferences and then restarting Scribus? Did that make a difference?

Also, what do you mean by: "Only the command itself is displayed."? What command and where and how is it being displayed? (This doesn't sound like normal Scribus functionality.)

It looks like the attached screen snip from the PDF.

As with my previous posts, GarryP, I'm working through Windows 7. I've set up the page numbering through the master pages in my file, and have been working through a tutorial. I tried using Insert>Character>Page Number, which put a hash # in place of the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+P, and when I closed Master Pages, all of the pages I had experimented on (FeatureL), had disappeared!

So I don't know what is going wrong, and would appreciate some instructions so that I can go about this in the correct manner.

I remembered that you're using WIndows 7 but I was writing with the understanding that most people who come to this thread will not necessarily have read your previous posts. Most people who come to the forum see the threads/posts out of chronological sequence so it's preferable to give them a reasonable amount of information as early as possible. (That's why I also gave Linux and Mac information.)

Can you confirm the procedure below please?

A. You create a text frame;
B. You double-click the text frame to invoke in-line editing;
C. You press the Ctrl key and keep it depressed;
D. You press the Alt key and keep both it and the Ctrl key depressed;
E. You press the Shift key and keep it and the previous two keys depressed;
F. You press the P key and then release all four keys;
G. When the keys have been released, the text "Ctrl+Alt+Shift+P" (without the quotes) is inserted into the text frame.

Is that what you are saying is happening, or is it something else? I just want to make sure we're both talking about the same thing.

Hi GarryP,

I didn't say that, and in fact I didn't do that, because the tutorial didn't make that clear. However, I just tried what you said, and it put a # in the text frame of the left hand master page. Upon checking the file, it seems to have worked, so thanks, that's great!  ;D

Next question is, how do I force the page numbering to start a 1 on a different page? For example, my document has assumed that the cover page is page 1, and has commenced numbering the following pages from page 2 as the first left hand page.

If I want to keep the inside cover page unnumbered, and have the first right hand page as a contents page that has either a "page 1", or a roman numeral as its number, how would I go about adjusting the numbering to suit?

in 'file' → 'document setup' → 'sections' you can define different sections and for every section you can chose a numbering style and a starting point.

Glad to learn about sections and automatic page numbering! I'm wondering if Sections can also be used to give a different running head to the different sections. For instance, I am working on a book with three novellas. I will be numbering continuously after the Preface, but I'd like the running header to say the novella title for each section. Possible?

Also, is there some way to suppress the page number on the first page of each novella, and on each new chapter page?

(I'm using 1.4.3 64bit on a Windows 10 Home 64 bit Asus laptop)

Thanks!
Harry

@harryllama
When you open the Sections dialog, there is an attribute called Shown that has a selection box. Default state is selected, so leave it selected. If you begin each chapter as a new Section, then each section (CHAPTER) can be changed.

For example, you document has 3 chapters. It also has an introduction. You decide that you want to have the introduction to have page numbers that look like i. iii. iii. iv., etc. whereas the chapter pages are standard arabic numerals. Your document contains a total of 27 pages.
Intro.    2 pages (1-2)
Chap1   6 pages (3-8)
Chap2 13 pages (9-21)
Chap3   6 pages (22-27)

Create four sections, and name them as below.
Name     Shown     From    To    Style    Start
Intro         v             1        2     i,ii,iii,     1
Chap1       v             4        8     1,2,3,    4   [notice you leave out page 3!]
Chap2       v            10      21    1,2,3,   10   [notice you leave out page 9!]
Chap3       v            23      27    1,2,3,   23   [notice you leave out page 22!]

This will display the numbers on your two introduction pages i, ii.
Chap1 begins on page 3 but no number displayed, then the rest of pages numbered 4-8.
Chap2  begins on page 9 but no number displayed, then the rest of pages numbered 10-21.
Chap3  begins on page 22 but no number displayed, then the rest of pages numbered 23-27.

I do this a lot, to differentiate chapters in photo books.
As I use the Scribus french interface, I'm not sure of the english equivalent of "Gabarit", maybe "Model" or "Pattern", or something like that? You can find it in the Page menu, 6th and 7th lines. I actually create two "gabarits" for each chapter, one for left pages, and the other one for right pages. You can put whatever you want in your "gabarits" and it appears on the page you applies it to, but the information of the "gabarit" cannot be modified on the page itself.

If you want to see some result, you can have a look at one of my books, for example.

I believe you are talking about using different Master pages for each chapter.

That might be the right word, but I can't know for sure as I don't use the english interface.

That would be "template". But Scribus changed to using "Master page".

Using Chrome, the "preview" of your book does not display headers; only the images are displayed on the pages.
